This 4-day Kilimanjaro and Moshi adventure package is made for travellers who want to experience the natural and cultural highlights around Mount Kilimanjaro without attempting a full multi-day summit climb. It combines a Mount Kilimanjaro day hike on the Marangu Route, Materuni Waterfalls, a local coffee experience and a relaxing visit to Chemka Hot Springs.

EKO TANZANIA ADVENTURES arranges this as a private tour, with transport, guides and activities planned around your arrival schedule, fitness level and interests. It is suitable for couples, families, friends, solo travellers and safari visitors looking to see a different side of Tanzania.

Why Choose a Kilimanjaro and Moshi Adventure?

Mount Kilimanjaro is famous for its summit, but the region offers much more than climbing to Uhuru Peak. The lower slopes are home to Chagga villages, banana and coffee farms, rivers, rainforest trails and scenic waterfalls. A short Moshi package lets you experience these places at a relaxed pace.

This itinerary includes physical activity, but it is not a full mountain climb. The Marangu Route day hike gives you a taste of Kilimanjaro National Park and its montane forest without requiring camping equipment or several days at high altitude. Materuni Waterfalls offers a blend of walking, local food and coffee culture, while Chemka Hot Springs provides a calm final day in clear, naturally fed water.

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi – Welcome to the Kilimanjaro Region

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, Arusha Airport or your agreed pickup point in Arusha or Moshi. A representative from EKO TANZANIA ADVENTURES will meet you and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi.

The drive from Kilimanjaro International Airport to Moshi usually takes under an hour, depending on traffic and hotel location. On clear days, Mount Kilimanjaro may be visible above the town, especially in the early morning or late afternoon.

After checking in, take time to relax and recover from your journey. Depending on your arrival time, you can explore Moshi town, visit a local craft shop, enjoy a coffee at a café or simply rest at the hotel.

Your guide will brief you about the next few days, including the Materuni walk, the Kilimanjaro day hike and what to bring. This is a good time to ask questions about weather, footwear, fitness and local customs.

Overnight: Hotel or lodge in Moshi
Meals: Dinner, depending on arrival time and confirmed arrangement

Day 2: Materuni Waterfalls and Chagga Coffee Experience

After breakfast, travel from Moshi to Materuni village on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The drive takes you through green countryside, small farms and village roads, with views towards the mountain when the weather is clear.

Materuni is known for its waterfall, coffee-growing tradition and scenic location. On arrival, meet your local guide and begin a walk through the village and surrounding landscape. The route passes banana trees, coffee plants, small farms and forested paths.

The walk to Materuni Waterfalls is moderately easy but can be muddy or uneven after rain. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. As you approach the falls, the sound of water becomes louder before the path opens to reveal a tall cascade dropping into a natural pool below.

Take time to enjoy the setting, take photographs and relax in the fresh mountain air. Swimming may be possible for confident swimmers depending on local conditions, but the water can be cold.

After the waterfall visit, continue to a local coffee farm or household for a traditional coffee experience. You will learn how coffee is grown, harvested, dried, roasted and prepared. Depending on the programme, you may help grind roasted beans by hand and enjoy a fresh cup of Kilimanjaro coffee.

A local lunch is usually included, offering a chance to taste simple Tanzanian dishes prepared by community hosts. The day is not only about scenery; it is an opportunity to understand how farming and coffee production support families on the mountain slopes.

Return to Moshi in the afternoon. Spend the evening at leisure and prepare for the Kilimanjaro day hike.

Overnight: Hotel or lodge in Moshi
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3: Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route Day Hike

After an early breakfast, leave Moshi and drive to Marangu Gate, the entrance point for the Marangu Route in Kilimanjaro National Park. The journey passes through villages and forested areas on the eastern side of the mountain.

At Marangu Gate, your guide completes the registration procedures before the hike begins. The day hike follows a well-established trail through montane rainforest, one of the most beautiful environments on Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes.

The forest is often cool and green, with tall trees, ferns, moss-covered branches and colourful birdlife. You may see blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys or signs of smaller wildlife, although animals are never guaranteed.

The pace is steady and adjusted to your fitness level. This is not a summit attempt, but it is still a proper mountain walk. The trail can be wet, slippery or muddy depending on recent rainfall, so sturdy hiking shoes are important.

Many guests hike towards Mandara Hut, located at approximately 2,700 metres, before returning to Marangu Gate. The exact distance reached depends on your pace, weather, park guidance and available time. Your guide will make sure the day remains enjoyable and safe rather than pushing you beyond your comfort level.

Enjoy a packed lunch or picnic along the route, then begin the descent through the forest. Return to Marangu Gate in the afternoon and travel back to Moshi.

The evening is free to rest, enjoy dinner and reflect on your first experience of Kilimanjaro National Park.

Overnight: Hotel or lodge in Moshi
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4: Chemka Hot Springs and Departure

After breakfast, leave Moshi for Chemka Hot Springs, also known locally as Kikuletwa Hot Springs. The drive passes through rural landscapes, open land and small settlements before reaching the spring area.

Chemka Hot Springs is a natural freshwater pool surrounded by trees and vegetation. The water is clear and pleasantly warm, making it a relaxing place to spend time after the previous day’s hike. The pools are fed by underground sources linked to the Kilimanjaro region.

You can swim, float in the water, relax in the shade or simply enjoy the peaceful setting. There are ropes and deeper sections in some areas, so children and less-confident swimmers should always be supervised. Follow local guidance and avoid leaving waste behind.

Enjoy lunch at the springs or at a nearby arranged location before returning to Moshi, Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward travel.

If your international flight leaves early the following morning, we recommend adding an extra night in Moshi or Arusha after this package.

Meals: Breakfast and lunch

What Makes This Kilimanjaro Adventure Different?

This is not a standard wildlife safari and not a full Kilimanjaro summit climb. It is a short, varied experience that shows the landscapes and communities around Africa’s highest mountain.

Highlights include:

  • A guided walk to Materuni Waterfalls
  • Coffee-growing and traditional coffee preparation experience
  • A Mount Kilimanjaro National Park day hike on the Marangu Route
  • Rainforest scenery, mountain air and possible monkey sightings
  • Relaxation at Chemka Hot Springs
  • Private guide and transport throughout the journey
  • Flexible arrangement from Moshi, Arusha or Kilimanjaro Airport

Is the Marangu Route Day Hike Difficult?

The Marangu Route day hike is suitable for travellers with a reasonable level of fitness, but it should not be treated as an ordinary town walk. The trail climbs gradually through forest, and weather conditions can make the path muddy or slippery.

You do not need previous mountaineering experience for a standard day hike, but you should be comfortable walking for several hours. Your guide will set a sensible pace and will advise you on how far to hike based on the group’s energy level, weather and park timing.

For guests who prefer a gentler activity, EKO TANZANIA ADVENTURES can replace the day hike with a Marangu Waterfalls visit, a Moshi cultural tour or another suitable Kilimanjaro-region experience.
