7-Day Tanzania Mobile Camping Safari: A Bold Northern Circuit Adventure
7-Day Tanzania Mobile Camping Safari: A Bold Northern Circuit Adventure
A 7-day Tanzania mobile camping safari is made for travellers who want to spend more time close to the landscapes, wildlife sounds and changing light of the African bush. This private journey follows Tanzania’s celebrated Northern Circuit, combining Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park, the wide plains of Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater.
Instead of moving between large hotels every night, you travel with a practical camping setup arranged by your safari team. Your camp becomes part of the experience: wake to birdsong, share stories over dinner, look up at a vast night sky, and begin each game drive already close to the day’s adventure. It is a more down-to-earth way to experience Tanzania, while still travelling with a knowledgeable driver-guide and a carefully planned itinerary.
EKO TANZANIA ADVENTURES can tailor this safari for couples, families, friends, photographers, and small private groups. The route can also be adjusted around your arrival date, preferred accommodation before and after the safari, and the amount of time you would like in the Serengeti.

Why Choose a Tanzania Mobile Camping Safari?
A mobile camping safari brings you closer to the rhythm of the wilderness. You still travel with a professional guide, a safari vehicle and organised meals, but your evenings are less formal and more connected to the places you have spent the day exploring.
Tanzania’s Northern Circuit is ideal for camping because the parks offer very different environments within one route. Tarangire has ancient baobab trees and elephant herds. Lake Manyara is a compact, scenic park set below the Rift Valley escarpment. The Serengeti delivers open grasslands and classic predator country, while Ngorongoro Crater offers one of Africa’s most dramatic wildlife settings.
Camping is not about sacrificing the safari experience. It is about choosing an active, flexible and nature-focused way to travel. Depending on the confirmed camp arrangement, facilities may be simple, shared or private, so EKO TANZANIA ADVENTURES will explain the exact tent type, bedding, bathroom facilities and meals included before you book.
Day 1: Arrival in Arusha – Welcome to Tanzania
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport, where a representative from EKO TANZANIA ADVENTURES will meet you and transfer you to your hotel in Arusha. The drive gives you your first glimpse of northern Tanzania’s lively towns, distant mountains and green roadside farms.
Arusha is the main gateway to Tanzania’s northern safari parks. It sits beneath Mount Meru and is a useful place to rest after an international flight before the safari begins. Depending on your arrival time, you may relax at the hotel, visit a local craft market, or simply enjoy a quiet evening preparing for the days ahead.
Your safari guide will meet you for a briefing. This is the right time to discuss your interests, such as big cats, elephants, birds, photography, cultural experiences or the Great Migration. Your guide will also explain the following day’s departure time and answer practical questions about the camping safari.
Overnight: Hotel in Arusha
Meals: Dinner, depending on arrival time and package arrangement
Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park – Elephants and Baobab Landscapes
After breakfast, leave Arusha and drive south-west towards Tarangire National Park. The journey usually takes around two to three hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. As you approach the park, the scenery becomes drier and more open, with acacia woodland, open grassland and the distinctive baobab trees that make Tarangire so recognisable.
Tarangire is especially well known for elephants. During the dry season, many animals gather around the Tarangire River, creating excellent opportunities to see elephants, zebras, wildebeest, giraffes, buffaloes and a wide variety of antelope. Your guide will take time to look for smaller details too, from colourful birds and dwarf mongooses to monitor lizards and warthogs.
A picnic lunch is normally enjoyed at a designated park site before the afternoon game drive continues. Tarangire often feels quieter than some of the larger northern parks, and this can make wildlife viewing feel particularly personal. Lions, leopards and cheetahs live in the area, although sightings are never guaranteed on safari.
Later, leave the park and continue to your selected campsite near Tarangire, Mto wa Mbu or the Karatu area, depending on the final route and campsite availability. Settle in, enjoy dinner and listen to the evening sounds of rural northern Tanzania.
Overnight: Selected campsite
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 3: Lake Manyara National Park – Forest, Rift Valley and Birdlife
Today you travel to Lake Manyara National Park, a scenic park located below the dramatic wall of the Great Rift Valley. Although smaller than Serengeti or Tarangire, Lake Manyara has a remarkable variety of habitats. You may pass through groundwater forest, open grassy areas, acacia woodland and lakeshore environments in one game drive.
The forest near the entrance is often cool and green, with opportunities to see baboons, blue monkeys and many bird species. As the drive continues, you may see elephants moving through the woodland, giraffes browsing among the trees, buffaloes resting in the shade and hippos in suitable wetland areas.
Lake Manyara is also well known among birdwatchers. Flamingos may be seen along the lake depending on water levels, while pelicans, storks, hornbills, kingfishers and raptors add colour and movement to the landscape. The park is associated with tree-climbing lions, but this behaviour is not guaranteed and should be treated as a possible bonus rather than an expectation.
After your game drive and picnic lunch, continue towards the Ngorongoro Highlands or Karatu area. The roads rise into cooler, greener country, where farms, coffee plantations and small villages sit on the slopes.
Overnight: Selected campsite near Karatu or the Ngorongoro Highlands
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 4: Journey to Serengeti National Park – The Plains Open Ahead
After breakfast, begin the journey towards Serengeti National Park. The route travels through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and the drive itself is part of the safari. You may pause at an approved viewpoint overlooking the Ngorongoro Crater before continuing across the highlands and towards the famous Serengeti plains.
The name Serengeti is often translated as “endless plains,” and the landscape begins to explain that description as you reach the open grasslands. Granite kopjes, flat-topped acacia trees and distant herds create the classic East African safari scene many travellers dream of seeing.
Game viewing begins as soon as you enter the Serengeti. Depending on the season and the exact area visited, you may encounter wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, giraffes, elephants, hyenas and a variety of predators. The Great Migration moves throughout the ecosystem, so its location changes over the year. Your guide will plan the day around current wildlife movements and road conditions.
Arrive at your selected campsite or mobile camp area in the Serengeti later in the day. Once your camp is ready, enjoy dinner and a peaceful night under the stars.
Overnight: Selected campsite or mobile camp in Serengeti
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 5: Full-Day Serengeti Safari – Big Cats, Herds and Open Skies
This full day is dedicated to Serengeti National Park. You may choose an early morning game drive, return to camp for breakfast, then continue with another drive later in the day. Alternatively, you can carry a picnic lunch and stay out for a longer full-day exploration.
The Serengeti is one of the best places in Tanzania for observing the natural relationships between predators and prey. Lions rest in the shade during the warmer hours, cheetahs use termite mounds and open ground to scan for prey, and leopards may be found near riverine woodland or along quiet tracks. Your guide will read animal tracks, listen for alarm calls and use experience to choose productive areas.
The day is not only about large predators. Look closely and you may see ostriches crossing the plains, secretary birds hunting through the grass, hippos resting in pools, jackals moving quickly through the bush and colourful agama lizards on rocks. The Serengeti rewards patience, and a slow game drive often reveals the most interesting moments.
In the late afternoon, the light becomes soft and golden. This is a wonderful time for photography and for watching animals become more active after the heat of the day. Return to camp for dinner, where you can reflect on the day with your guide and fellow travellers.
Overnight: Selected campsite or mobile camp in Serengeti
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 6: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Highlands – Wildlife on the Way
Enjoy a final morning game drive in the Serengeti before beginning your journey east towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The route gives you another chance to see wildlife as you leave the plains, and your guide may stop in productive areas when conditions allow.
This is a transition day, but it still offers excellent safari viewing. The changing scenery is part of what makes this itinerary special. The broad grasslands of Serengeti gradually give way to higher country, wooded slopes and cooler air around Ngorongoro.
Arrive at your selected campsite in the Ngorongoro Highlands or near Karatu in the afternoon. The exact overnight location depends on the camping plan, permits and availability. A highland campsite can be cooler at night than the Serengeti, so warm layers are useful.
Take time to rest, organise your camera equipment and prepare for the final safari highlight: the Ngorongoro Crater.
Overnight: Selected campsite near Ngorongoro or Karatu
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 7: Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive and Return to Arusha
Rise early and travel to the Ngorongoro Crater descent road. The crater is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and contains an extraordinary concentration of wildlife within a relatively compact area. As your vehicle descends from the rim, the view opens across grassland, lakes, forest patches and distant crater walls.
A morning game drive on the crater floor offers opportunities to see lions, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hyenas, jackals, hippos and many bird species. Black rhinos also live in the conservation area, though sightings depend on location, visibility and luck. Your guide will drive carefully through the designated tracks and explain the crater’s ecology along the way.
Enjoy a picnic lunch at an approved site before ascending the crater and beginning the drive back to Arusha. You may be dropped at your hotel, Arusha Airport or Kilimanjaro International Airport, depending on your travel plans. If your international flight leaves early the next morning, we recommend adding an overnight stay in Arusha after the safari.
Meals: Breakfast and lunch
What Makes This Safari Special?
This 7-day itinerary gives you time in four distinct wildlife areas without rushing every day. It balances major highlights with the quieter pleasures of camping: morning coffee in fresh air, the glow of sunset over camp, and the sense that the wilderness is never far away.
You will travel with a private guide who can adapt the game drives to your interests. Photographers may prefer longer stays near wildlife sightings. Birdwatchers can focus on woodland and wetland habitats. Families may choose a relaxed pace with regular breaks. Couples can enjoy the privacy of a tailor-made safari rather than a fixed group schedule.

What to Pack for a Mobile Camping Safari
Pack soft-sided luggage where possible, as it is easier to store in a safari vehicle. Bring neutral-coloured clothing, a warm fleece or jacket for early mornings, a sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes and a reusable water bottle.
A small day bag is useful for your camera, binoculars, medication and valuables. Bring spare camera batteries, memory cards and a power bank, especially if photography is important to you. Campsite electricity arrangements vary, so it is wise not to rely on charging opportunities every night.
Important Safari Notes
Wildlife moves freely, and no safari company can guarantee particular sightings. Your guide will use local knowledge and experience to give you the strongest possible chance of seeing a wide range of animals while respecting park rules and animal welfare.
Camping facilities vary by location. Some campsites have shared washrooms and dining areas, while private mobile-camp arrangements may offer different levels of comfort. EKO TANZANIA ADVENTURES will confirm the exact camping standard before you travel, so you know what to expect.
This itinerary can be adjusted for a more comfortable lodge-and-camping combination, a longer Serengeti stay, a Great Migration-focused route, or a Zanzibar beach holiday after your safari.
