This 9-Day Northern Tanzania Wilderness Safari is designed for travellers who want to go beyond the standard safari route. It combines wildlife, volcanic scenery, local culture, open plains, lakes and dramatic Rift Valley landscapes in one private adventure.

You will visit Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti National Park, Lake Natron and Lake Eyasi. The itinerary gives you time in Tanzania’s classic wildlife destinations while also taking you to less-visited areas such as Lake Natron and Lake Eyasi.

This is a strong choice for couples, photographers, wildlife lovers, families with older children and travellers who want a longer, more varied Tanzania safari.

EKO Tanzania Adventures can arrange this safari as a private mid-range, luxury or adventure-style package according to your accommodation preferences and travel dates.

Why Choose This 9-Day Tanzania Safari?

A longer safari allows you to experience Tanzania at a better pace. Instead of rushing through famous parks in only a few days, this route gives you time to enjoy different landscapes and spend several nights in key wildlife areas.

The journey includes Tanzania’s classic Northern Circuit parks, but it does not end there. Lake Natron adds volcanic and Rift Valley scenery, while Lake Eyasi brings cultural experiences and a quieter side of Tanzania.

This package gives you the chance to:

  • Search for elephants among Tarangire’s baobab trees
  • Explore the forest and lake environment of Lake Manyara
  • Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater
  • Spend multiple days on safari in Serengeti National Park
  • Look for lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, buffalo and antelope
  • Follow Great Migration movement when travelling in the right season
  • Visit Lake Natron beneath Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano
  • Search for Lesser Flamingos when conditions allow
  • Explore the Lake Eyasi area
  • Enjoy guided cultural experiences arranged with local hosts
  • Travel through the Great Rift Valley and Ngorongoro Highlands
  • Experience a wider picture of Tanzania in one journey

Wildlife sightings are always based on nature. No safari operator can promise a specific animal, river crossing, predator hunt or Great Migration event. Your guide will use experience and current conditions to make each game drive as rewarding as possible.

Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania – Welcome to Arusha

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport, where you will be met by a representative from EKO Tanzania Adventures.

Transfer to your hotel in Arusha and take time to relax after your international journey.

Arusha is the main starting point for Northern Tanzania safaris. It sits below Mount Meru and is surrounded by coffee farms, green highlands and views toward the national parks.

Depending on your arrival time, you may enjoy dinner at your hotel, prepare your luggage and meet your guide for a short safari briefing.

Your guide will explain the route, driving times, game-drive arrangements, park rules and what to expect during the trip.

Overnight: Hotel or lodge in Arusha
Meals: Dinner, depending on arrival time

Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park – Elephants and Baobabs

After breakfast, begin your safari with a drive to Tarangire National Park.

Tarangire is known for its elephants, baobab trees, acacia woodland and seasonal river habitat. It has a distinctive feel compared with Serengeti, with more woodland and impressive ancient baobabs rising above the plains.

After entering the park, start your first game drive in a private 4×4 safari vehicle.

Possible wildlife may include:

  • Elephants
  • Giraffes
  • Zebras
  • Wildebeest
  • Buffalo
  • Warthogs
  • Impalas
  • Waterbuck
  • Baboons
  • Lions
  • Leopards, although sightings are never guaranteed
  • Many bird species

Tarangire is particularly rewarding for elephant viewing. You may see family groups moving through the bush, calves staying close to their mothers or herds gathering near water areas.

Enjoy a packed lunch at a suitable picnic site before continuing with the afternoon game drive.

Later, leave the park and drive to your lodge or tented camp for dinner and overnight.

Overnight: Lodge or tented camp in Tarangire / Karatu area
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3: Lake Manyara National Park – Forest, Lake and Birdlife

After breakfast, travel to Lake Manyara National Park.

Lake Manyara is smaller than Serengeti, but it offers a very different safari environment. The park includes groundwater forest, open grassland, lake shore, woodland and dramatic views of the Rift Valley escarpment.

The forest near the entrance is often lively with baboons, blue monkeys, birds and butterflies. As you move through the park, the landscape opens toward grasslands and the lake area.

Possible wildlife may include:

  • Baboons
  • Elephants
  • Giraffes
  • Buffalo
  • Hippos
  • Zebras
  • Wildebeest
  • Warthogs
  • Impalas
  • Birds around the lake and forest
  • Lions, although sightings are never guaranteed

Lake Manyara can be rewarding for birdwatchers. Depending on the season and water conditions, you may see flamingos, pelicans, storks, herons, egrets, kingfishers and birds of prey.

Enjoy a picnic lunch inside or near the park before continuing with the afternoon game drive.

Later, travel to the Karatu or Ngorongoro Highlands area for dinner and overnight.

Overnight: Lodge or tented camp in Karatu / Ngorongoro Highlands
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater Safari and Transfer to Serengeti

Wake up early for breakfast, then travel to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

The drive climbs into the Ngorongoro Highlands, where the scenery becomes cooler, greener and more dramatic. From the crater rim, you may enjoy a view across one of Tanzania’s most impressive natural landscapes.

Descend approximately 600 metres into the Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive.

The crater floor contains grassland, wetlands, forest patches and a soda lake. It supports a wide range of wildlife in a relatively compact area.

During the game drive, you may see:

  • Lions
  • Buffalo
  • Zebras
  • Wildebeest
  • Hippos
  • Hyenas
  • Jackals
  • Elephants
  • Gazelles
  • Flamingos near Lake Magadi
  • Black rhino, although sightings are never guaranteed

Enjoy a packed lunch at an approved picnic site inside the conservation area.

After the crater safari, continue toward Serengeti National Park. This is a longer transfer day, but wildlife viewing continues as you move through the wider Serengeti ecosystem.

Arrive at your Serengeti camp or lodge in time for dinner and overnight.

Overnight: Tented camp or lodge in Serengeti National Park
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 5: Full-Day Serengeti National Park Safari

Today is dedicated to exploring Serengeti National Park.

Wake up early for breakfast before leaving on a morning game drive. Serengeti is known for its wide plains, open skies, big-cat habitats and large herds of grazing animals.

Your guide will choose the game-drive route according to wildlife movement, weather, recent sightings and your travel season.

Possible wildlife may include:

  • Lions
  • Leopards
  • Cheetahs
  • Hyenas
  • Elephants
  • Giraffes
  • Buffalo
  • Zebras
  • Wildebeest
  • Gazelles
  • Topi
  • Hartebeest
  • Jackals
  • Ostriches
  • Birds of prey

If you are travelling during a period when Great Migration herds are in or near your safari area, your guide will focus the game drive around the most suitable locations. The migration is driven by rain, grass and water availability, so exact herd locations change throughout the year.

Enjoy a packed lunch in a suitable picnic area or return to camp for lunch depending on the day’s plan.

In the afternoon, continue with game viewing. As the light softens, this can be a wonderful time for photography.

Return to camp for dinner and overnight.

Overnight: Tented camp or lodge in Serengeti National Park
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 6: Another Serengeti Safari Day – Wildlife and Photography

A second full day in Serengeti gives you a better chance to explore a different area and enjoy wildlife without rushing.

After breakfast, leave camp for a morning game drive. You may focus on river areas, kopjes, open plains, woodland edges or a location where wildlife has recently been active.

Serengeti is not only about large animals. It is also a place to notice the smaller details of the ecosystem: birds moving through grassland, mongooses beside the road, lizards on rocks, butterflies around flowers and animal tracks in the dust.

Your guide will help explain how predators, grazers, scavengers and birds are connected within the landscape.

You may choose a full-day safari with packed lunch or a split morning and afternoon game-drive schedule with time to rest at camp during the warmest part of the day.

Return to camp for dinner and your final Serengeti overnight.

Overnight: Tented camp or lodge in Serengeti National Park
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

9-Day Northern Tanzania Wilderness Safari

Day 7: Serengeti to Lake Natron – Volcanic Landscapes and Rift Valley Views

After breakfast, leave Serengeti and travel toward Lake Natron.

This is a scenic transfer through remote landscapes, open plains and Maasai land. The journey can be long and road conditions vary depending on season, so it is important to travel with a well-maintained 4×4 vehicle and an experienced guide.

As you approach Lake Natron, the landscape becomes more volcanic and dramatic. You may see Ol Doinyo Lengai rising above the plains. The mountain is sacred to the Maasai and is Tanzania’s only active volcano.

Arrive at your Lake Natron camp or lodge and settle in.

Later in the afternoon, enjoy a scenic drive or guided walk near the lake shore, depending on weather and local conditions.

Lake Natron is an alkaline soda lake and an important breeding area for Lesser Flamingos. Flamingo numbers change greatly depending on season, water levels and breeding conditions, so sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Enjoy sunset views across the lake and surrounding Rift Valley landscape before returning to camp for dinner.

Overnight: Camp or lodge near Lake Natron
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 8: Lake Natron to Lake Eyasi – Waterfall, Culture and Changing Landscapes

After breakfast, enjoy a morning activity in the Lake Natron area.

Depending on time, weather and local conditions, this may include a guided visit to the lake shore, a landscape drive, birdwatching or a walk near the Engaresero / Ngare Sero waterfall area.

The waterfall walk can involve uneven paths, shallow water crossings and gorge terrain. It is arranged with a local guide, and the exact route depends on water levels and safety conditions.

After the morning activity, begin the drive toward Lake Eyasi. This is another scenic transfer through the Rift Valley region and can be long, but it offers a very different view of Northern Tanzania.

Lake Eyasi is a seasonal salt lake south of the Ngorongoro Highlands. The landscape around it is dry, open and culturally significant.

Arrive at your lodge or camp in the Lake Eyasi area, relax and enjoy dinner.

Overnight: Lodge or camp near Lake Eyasi
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 9: Lake Eyasi Cultural Experience and Return to Arusha

Wake up early for breakfast before taking part in a cultural experience arranged with local hosts in the Lake Eyasi area.

The area is associated with several communities, including Hadzabe and Datoga people. Every community has its own history, traditions, language and way of life.

The purpose of the visit is to listen, learn and understand local perspectives respectfully. It should never feel like people are being treated as an attraction.

Depending on the local programme and availability, the visit may include learning about crafts, food, storytelling, local traditions or daily activities.

Remember to:

  • Ask before taking photographs
  • Dress respectfully
  • Listen to the local host
  • Avoid entering private homes without invitation
  • Respect local customs and language
  • Buy crafts only if you genuinely wish to do so

After the cultural experience, begin the drive back to Arusha.

Arrive in the afternoon and transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport, Arusha Airport or your hotel according to your departure arrangements.

This marks the end of your 9-Day Northern Tanzania Wilderness Safari with EKO Tanzania Adventures.

Meals: Breakfast and lunch
