7-Day Great Migration River Crossing Safari: A Thrilling Northern Serengeti Journey
7-Day Great Migration River Crossing Safari: A Thrilling Northern Serengeti Journey
This 7-day Great Migration river crossing safari is designed for travellers who want to experience the northern Serengeti during one of the most dramatic stages of the wildebeest migration. The itinerary combines Tarangire National Park, Central Serengeti, Northern Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, giving you a complete northern Tanzania safari with several days positioned close to the Mara River area.
Between roughly July and October, depending on rainfall and herd movements, large groups of wildebeest and zebras may move through Northern Serengeti and towards or across the Mara River. River crossings are among Africa’s most sought-after wildlife events, but they are unpredictable. Herds may gather near a riverbank for hours, move away without crossing, or cross quickly with little warning. This itinerary gives you time in the right area and a private guide who can respond to current wildlife conditions.
EKO TANZANIA ADVENTURES arranges this as a private safari, allowing you to travel at your own pace and spend time where the wildlife action is strongest. It is an ideal package for photographers, couples, families, honeymooners and travellers whose main goal is to follow the Great Migration in Tanzania.

What Makes the Mara River Crossing Season Special?
The Great Migration is a continuous annual movement of wildebeest, zebras and gazelles through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. It is guided by rainfall, fresh grazing and water availability rather than a strict calendar.
During the northern migration season, many herds travel through Northern Serengeti, where some may attempt to cross the Mara River. These crossings are unpredictable because animals often wait at the riverbank, move between different crossing points or change direction. Crocodiles, fast currents, steep banks and the pressure of the herd create an intense natural scene.
It is important to book this safari with realistic expectations. No operator can guarantee a river crossing on a specific day. The value of the trip is not only one crossing moment. Northern Serengeti also offers beautiful landscapes, resident wildlife, riverine forest, big cats, elephants, giraffes and a more remote safari atmosphere.
Day 1: Arrival in Arusha – Welcome to Tanzania
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport, where an EKO TANZANIA ADVENTURES representative will meet you and transfer you to your hotel in Arusha.
The first day is intentionally relaxed. You can recover from your flight, enjoy the hotel setting and prepare for the safari ahead. Arusha sits beneath Mount Meru and is the main gateway to northern Tanzania’s wildlife parks.
Your safari guide will provide a briefing about the itinerary, luggage, road conditions and current migration information. Since the location of the herds changes, the final game-drive plan may be adjusted during the safari to give you the best possible wildlife opportunities.
Overnight: Hotel in Arusha
Meals: Dinner, depending on arrival time and confirmed arrangement
Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park – Elephants and Baobab Landscapes
After breakfast, leave Arusha and drive towards Tarangire National Park. The journey normally takes around two to three hours, depending on road conditions and comfort stops.
Tarangire is known for its huge baobab trees, large elephant herds and varied habitats. During the dry season, animals often gather around the Tarangire River and nearby water sources. You may see elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, impalas, warthogs and a great variety of birds.
Your guide will lead a private game drive through the park, stopping for photography and wildlife observation whenever there is something interesting to see. Tarangire is also home to lions, leopards and cheetahs, although sightings are never guaranteed.
Enjoy a picnic lunch at an approved area before continuing with an afternoon game drive. Later, leave the park and travel to your lodge or tented camp near Karatu or Mto wa Mbu.
Overnight: Lodge or tented camp near Karatu or Mto wa Mbu
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 3: Karatu to Central Serengeti – Wildlife Viewing on the Way
After breakfast, travel through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area towards Central Serengeti. The road climbs through the highlands before opening onto the vast Serengeti plains.
Depending on timing, there may be a stop at an approved viewpoint overlooking Ngorongoro Crater. Continue through the conservation area and enter Serengeti National Park, where game viewing begins as soon as you reach the open grasslands.
Central Serengeti is known for its strong resident wildlife population. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, elephants, giraffes, zebras and many antelope species can be seen throughout the year. This is an excellent area for big-cat viewing and an important stop before travelling further north.
Your guide will make wildlife stops along the way, so the transfer itself becomes part of the safari. Arrive at your camp or lodge later in the day, enjoy dinner and rest before continuing towards Northern Serengeti.
Overnight: Lodge or tented camp in Central Serengeti
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 4: Central Serengeti to Northern Serengeti – Following the Migration
Enjoy breakfast before leaving Central Serengeti and travelling north towards the Mara River region. This is a scenic day that shows the scale and changing character of Serengeti National Park.
The route passes through open plains, kopjes, woodland and riverine areas. Your guide will watch for wildlife throughout the drive, and you may see elephants, giraffes, zebras, lions, hyenas, gazelles and many birds along the way.
As you move north, the landscape becomes more remote and varied. The Northern Serengeti is known for rolling hills, granite outcrops, woodland and the Mara River system. During migration season, the route may be adjusted based on recent herd reports and the most active wildlife areas.
Arrive at your camp or lodge in Northern Serengeti in the afternoon. Seasonal tented camps are particularly popular during this period because they are positioned close to migration routes and river-crossing areas.
Overnight: Tented camp or lodge in Northern Serengeti
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 5: Full-Day Northern Serengeti Safari – Mara River and Migration Herds
Today is dedicated to Northern Serengeti and the Mara River area. Your guide will depart early and use current information to search for migration herds, riverbank gatherings and resident wildlife.
A river crossing can happen suddenly, and patience is important. Wildebeest may gather at a crossing point, approach the water, retreat and return later. Sometimes a single animal begins the movement and the herd follows; at other times, the group changes direction entirely. Your guide will help you understand the behaviour without making promises that nature cannot keep.
Even if a crossing does not occur, the day offers excellent wildlife viewing. The Mara River attracts hippos, crocodiles, birds and animals coming to drink. Lions and other predators may follow the migration herds, while elephants, giraffes and antelopes are common in different parts of the area.
You may enjoy a picnic lunch in an approved location to maximise your time in the field. The game drive continues through the afternoon, focusing on the areas with the strongest wildlife activity.
Return to camp in the evening for dinner and a night in Northern Serengeti.
Overnight: Tented camp or lodge in Northern Serengeti
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 6: Northern Serengeti to Ngorongoro Highlands – Final Serengeti Viewing
After breakfast, enjoy a final morning game drive in Northern Serengeti before beginning the journey south towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Depending on wildlife activity, your guide may spend time near the Mara River, follow nearby herds or explore another productive route before departing.
This is a longer transfer day, but it remains part of the safari. The drive gives you one final chance to observe Serengeti’s changing habitats and wildlife as you travel from the northern region back towards the highlands.
Arrive at your lodge or tented camp near Ngorongoro or Karatu in the late afternoon. The higher elevation brings cooler air and a different landscape after several days on the Serengeti plains.
Relax, enjoy dinner and prepare for the Ngorongoro Crater game drive the following morning.
Overnight: Lodge or tented camp near Ngorongoro or Karatu
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 7: Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive and Return to Arusha
After an early breakfast, drive to the Ngorongoro Crater descent road. The view from the crater rim is one of the great landscapes of Africa: a vast volcanic caldera containing grassland, wetlands, forest patches and Lake Magadi.
Descend to the crater floor for a morning game drive. Ngorongoro supports an impressive concentration of wildlife, including lions, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas, jackals, elephants and many bird species. Black rhinos live in the conservation area, though sightings depend on distance, visibility and movement.
Enjoy a picnic lunch at an approved site before ascending the crater in the afternoon. Continue back to Arusha, where you can be dropped at your hotel, Arusha Airport or Kilimanjaro International Airport according to your travel plans.
For travellers with an early international departure the next day, we recommend adding an overnight stay in Arusha after the safari.
Meals: Breakfast and lunch
Why Stay Several Nights Near Northern Serengeti?
A river-crossing safari needs time and flexibility. Trying to visit Northern Serengeti for only one short game drive can leave you dependent on luck. This itinerary includes two nights in the north, giving you a full day and part of another morning to search for herds and explore the Mara River area.
The extended time also allows you to enjoy Northern Serengeti beyond the migration. The region is quieter and more varied than many travellers expect, with beautiful river scenery, resident animals and excellent photographic opportunities.
For guests who want an even stronger river-crossing focus, EKO TANZANIA ADVENTURES can extend the itinerary to eight or nine days with additional nights in Northern Serengeti.

Important Great Migration Travel Notes
The Great Migration is a natural event, not a fixed performance. The movement of the herds and timing of river crossings depend on rain, grazing, water levels and animal behaviour. A Mara River crossing cannot be guaranteed, even during the usual season.
Your guide will use recent wildlife reports, personal experience and daily conditions to position the safari in the most promising areas. Patience, flexibility and several days in the north give you the best chance of seeing meaningful migration activity.
The most popular period for this itinerary is generally from July to October, but migration patterns vary. Contact EKO TANZANIA ADVENTURES with your preferred month, and we will advise on the most suitable route and camp location.
