7-Day Mount Meru Climb & Kilimanjaro Discovery: Two Powerful Mountain Experiences
7-Day Mount Meru Climb & Kilimanjaro Discovery: Two Powerful Mountain Experiences
This 7-day Mount Meru climb and Kilimanjaro discovery package is for travellers who want to experience Tanzania’s two most important mountains in one carefully planned journey. The trip includes a 4-day Mount Meru trek in Arusha National Park, recovery time in Moshi, and a guided day hike on Mount Kilimanjaro’s Marangu Route.
Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain at 4,566 metres and one of East Africa’s most scenic high-altitude treks. It offers forest walking, wildlife sightings, volcanic landscapes, views towards Kilimanjaro and a rewarding summit climb to Socialist Peak. After the trek, you travel to Moshi for recovery and a lighter Kilimanjaro experience, including a day hike through the rainforest on the Marangu Route.
This is not a full Kilimanjaro summit package. Instead, it is a balanced mountain holiday that combines a proper high-altitude trek with the chance to see Mount Kilimanjaro National Park, local Moshi life and the lower slopes of Africa’s highest mountain.
EKO TANZANIA ADVENTURES arranges this package with trained mountain guides, porters, meals on the trek, park fees, private transfers and suitable accommodation before and after the climb.

Why Combine Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro?
Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro are close geographically but offer very different mountain experiences. Mount Meru is a more compact trek with wildlife, forest, volcanic ridges and a narrow summit approach. Kilimanjaro is broader, higher and more widely known, but even a day hike on its lower slopes gives you a strong sense of its rainforest environment and scale.
Climbing Mount Meru first also provides useful high-altitude exposure. While this itinerary does not continue to a Kilimanjaro summit attempt, it is an excellent option for travellers who want a meaningful mountain challenge without spending more than a week trekking.
The package is especially attractive for hikers who want variety: wildlife in Arusha National Park, a high-altitude summit, time to recover in Moshi and a final day inside Kilimanjaro National Park.
Day 1: Arrival in Arusha – Welcome to Northern Tanzania
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, Arusha Airport or your agreed pickup location. An EKO TANZANIA ADVENTURES representative will meet you and transfer you to your hotel in Arusha.
Arusha is the main gateway to Mount Meru and sits at the foot of the mountain. Depending on weather conditions, Mount Meru may be visible above the town, especially in the early morning or late afternoon.
The rest of the day is kept relaxed so that you can recover from travel and prepare for the trek. Your mountain guide will brief you about the route, safety procedures, hut accommodation, daily walking schedule and required equipment.
This is the time to check your gear carefully. You need warm layers, waterproof clothing, sturdy hiking boots, a headlamp, gloves, sun protection and a sleeping bag suitable for cold mountain conditions.
Overnight: Hotel in Arusha
Meals: Dinner, depending on arrival time and confirmed arrangement
Day 2: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut – Wildlife and Forest Trekking
After an early breakfast, transfer to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park. Your guide completes registration procedures while the mountain crew prepares equipment and supplies.
The first day on Mount Meru is particularly special because the route passes through a national park with wildlife. As you hike through grassland and forest, you may see giraffes, buffaloes, warthogs, zebras, monkeys and a variety of birds. Wildlife sightings depend on the day and animal movement, but the possibility of seeing animals on a mountain trek makes Mount Meru different from most climbing routes.
The trail climbs gradually through forest and open areas. Your guide will set a steady pace, encouraging you to walk slowly and conserve energy for the higher days ahead. The scenery changes as you gain elevation, with views over the park and towards the Meru crater.
Arrive at Miriakamba Hut, located at approximately 2,514 metres. The hut is set in a beautiful forest clearing beneath the higher slopes of the mountain. After settling in, enjoy a hot meal and rest.
Trekking time: Approximately 4 to 6 hours
Elevation: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut, around 2,514 metres
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Miriakamba Hut
Day 3: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut – Entering the Alpine Zone
After breakfast, continue from Miriakamba Hut towards Saddle Hut. This is a shorter day in distance than the first, but the climb becomes steeper and the altitude gain is significant.
The route passes through lush forest before opening into moorland. As the trees become smaller, you gain wider views of the Arusha region, the Meru crater and, on clear days, Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.
One of the highlights of this day is the view of the ash cone and Meru’s volcanic landscape. The mountain begins to feel more dramatic as you approach the saddle between Meru’s main summit and the ash cone.
Arrive at Saddle Hut, located at approximately 3,570 metres. After lunch and rest, you may take a short acclimatisation walk towards Little Meru if the guide considers conditions suitable. This optional activity helps your body adjust to altitude and can offer a beautiful sunset view.
Return to Saddle Hut for an early dinner and rest. The summit attempt begins after midnight.
Trekking time: Approximately 3 to 5 hours, plus acclimatisation walk if arranged
Elevation: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut, around 3,570 metres
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Saddle Hut
Day 4: Mount Meru Summit Attempt – Socialist Peak and Descent
This is the most demanding day of the Mount Meru climb. You wake around midnight for a light meal and hot drink before beginning the ascent in darkness.
The summit trail climbs steadily towards Rhino Point and then follows a dramatic ridge towards Socialist Peak. The route can feel exposed in places, and temperatures are often very cold before sunrise. Your guide will keep the pace slow and controlled, checking on every climber regularly.
As dawn approaches, the sky brightens over the plains below. On clear mornings, the view towards Mount Kilimanjaro can be exceptional. Reaching Socialist Peak at 4,566 metres is a major achievement and offers a memorable sense of the mountain’s volcanic scale.
After photographs and a short stay at the summit, begin descending back to Saddle Hut for a rest and meal. Continue further down to Miriakamba Hut for the night. Although you are descending, the day remains physically demanding because of the long distance and lack of sleep.
Trekking time: Approximately 10 to 14 hours
Elevation: Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak at 4,566 metres, then descend to Miriakamba Hut
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Miriakamba Hut
Day 5: Descend Mount Meru and Transfer to Moshi
After breakfast, begin the final descent from Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate. The trail returns through forest and wildlife areas, offering another chance to enjoy the lower slopes of Arusha National Park.
At the gate, you will sign out of the park and receive your certificate if you reached the required summit point. Your vehicle will be waiting to transfer you from Arusha to Moshi, the main town beneath Mount Kilimanjaro.
The drive takes you through northern Tanzania’s changing countryside, with views of farms, villages and mountain slopes. On arrival in Moshi, check in at your hotel and enjoy a well-earned shower, proper bed and relaxed dinner.
This recovery afternoon is important. After the Mount Meru summit effort, you can rest, stretch, drink plenty of water and prepare for the lighter Kilimanjaro day hike.
Trekking time: Approximately 3 to 5 hours
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Hotel or lodge in Moshi
Day 6: Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route Day Hike
After breakfast, travel from Moshi to Marangu Gate in Mount Kilimanjaro National Park. This day is designed as a lower-altitude hiking and discovery experience rather than a summit climb.
At the gate, your Kilimanjaro guide completes the registration process before you begin walking through the rainforest. The Marangu Route is one of the most accessible ways to experience Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes. The trail passes beneath tall trees, ferns and moss-covered branches, with changing forest sounds and occasional monkey sightings.
Depending on the group’s pace, weather and park conditions, you hike towards Mandara Hut before returning to the gate. The walk gives you a genuine feel for Mount Kilimanjaro without requiring camping equipment or another high-altitude summit night.
The distance and turnaround point will be decided responsibly by your guide. After completing the hike, return to Moshi for a final dinner and evening at leisure.
Trekking time: Approximately 5 to 7 hours
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Hotel or lodge in Moshi
Day 7: Departure from Moshi or Kilimanjaro International Airport
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before your transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport, Arusha, Moshi town or another agreed departure point.
If you have extra time, EKO TANZANIA ADVENTURES can extend the journey with a Materuni Waterfalls and coffee tour, Chemka Hot Springs visit, wildlife safari, Zanzibar beach holiday or a longer Kilimanjaro climb.
Meals: Breakfast

How Difficult Is This Package?
This is an active mountain itinerary. The Mount Meru summit day is demanding because of the altitude, cold, overnight ascent and long descent. Climbers should have a good level of fitness and be prepared for several consecutive days of walking.
The Kilimanjaro day hike is less difficult than the Mount Meru summit climb, but it still involves several hours on mountain trails. It is included as a scenic and cultural mountain experience, not as a second summit attempt.
Altitude affects people differently. Fitness is important, but it does not prevent altitude sickness. Your guide will monitor your wellbeing throughout the Mount Meru trek, and you should report headaches, nausea, dizziness, unusual fatigue or breathing difficulties immediately.

Best Time for Mount Meru Trekking
Mount Meru can be climbed throughout much of the year, but many travellers prefer the drier periods, generally from January to early March and from June to October. Weather conditions can still change quickly, especially at higher elevations.
The forest can be wet, the summit can be cold and visibility may vary. Good clothing and a flexible attitude are essential in every season.
