Day 1: Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport – Arusha

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where an EKO Tanzania Adventures representative will meet you and transfer you to your selected luxury lodge or hotel in Arusha.

The drive from the airport to Arusha offers your first views of northern Tanzania. On a clear day, you may see Mount Meru and, depending on your location and weather, Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.

After checking in, take time to relax after your international journey. Enjoy the lodge gardens, pool or private terrace before your safari begins.

In the evening, meet your guide or travel coordinator for a safari briefing. You can discuss your interests, whether that is wildlife photography, birding, big cats, elephant behaviour, cultural experiences or simply a relaxed safari pace.

Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

After breakfast, meet your private safari guide and leave Arusha for Tarangire National Park. The drive normally takes around two to three hours through local towns, farmland and Maasai country.

Tarangire is known for its elephant herds, ancient baobab trees and the Tarangire River. It is one of the most scenic parks in northern Tanzania and gives you a strong introduction to wildlife viewing.

After entering the park, begin your private game drive. Your guide will move at a pace that suits you, stopping for photographs, bird sightings or longer wildlife observation when conditions are good.

Elephants are often the main attraction. You may see family groups walking through the woodland, young calves following their mothers or large bull elephants feeding near the river. Other wildlife may include giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, warthogs, baboons, impalas and gazelles.

Enjoy a private picnic lunch in the park or return to your lodge for lunch, depending on the selected accommodation and route. Continue with an afternoon game drive as the light becomes softer and wildlife becomes more active.

Day 3: Lake Manyara National Park and Rift Valley Scenery

After breakfast, drive to Lake Manyara National Park. This park is smaller than Serengeti but offers a very different environment. It sits below the Great Rift Valley escarpment and includes groundwater forest, acacia woodland, open grasslands and lake-edge habitats.

Begin your game drive through the forest, where you may see olive baboons, blue monkeys and other smaller wildlife. Lake Manyara is particularly known for large baboon troops, and seeing them move through the trees can be a highlight.

As the landscape opens, look for giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos and antelopes. Lake Manyara is also associated with tree-climbing lions, though sightings are not guaranteed and depend on where the lions are resting that day.

The lake attracts a variety of water birds. Depending on the season and water level, you may see flamingos, pelicans, storks, herons and many other species.

Enjoy lunch and continue with a relaxed afternoon game drive. Later, return to your luxury lodge in the Karatu area. Take time to enjoy the lodge facilities, sunset views and dinner.

Day 4: Ngorongoro Highlands to Central Serengeti

After breakfast, leave the highlands and travel through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area towards Serengeti National Park.

If weather permits, stop at the Ngorongoro Crater rim viewpoint. From here, you can look across the enormous crater floor before continuing west towards Serengeti.

The drive is scenic and becomes a game-viewing experience as you approach the plains. You may see Maasai communities, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest and other wildlife along the way.

Once inside Serengeti National Park, your game drive begins. The park’s open plains, kopjes, rivers and acacia trees create some of the most recognisable safari landscapes in Africa.

Your guide will look for lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras and seasonal wildebeest herds as you travel towards your luxury camp or lodge in Central Serengeti.

Arrive in the evening and settle into your tented suite or lodge room. Luxury tented camps offer the feeling of being close to the wilderness while still providing comfortable beds, private bathrooms, fine dining and attentive service.

Day 5: Full-Day Serengeti Luxury Game Drive

Today is dedicated to Serengeti National Park. After breakfast, enjoy a full-day private game drive with a packed gourmet picnic lunch or a return to camp for lunch, depending on your preferred schedule.

Central Serengeti, often called Seronera, is one of the best wildlife areas in Tanzania because of its mixture of grasslands, rivers, woodland and kopjes. These habitats support wildlife throughout the year.

Lions are frequently seen in the area. You may find them resting in the shade, interacting with cubs, watching prey animals or lying on rocky kopjes. Leopards may be seen near riverine trees, while cheetahs often search for prey across open plains.

The Serengeti also supports elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, hippos, hyenas, jackals, warthogs, baboons, impalas, gazelles and many bird species.

If the Great Migration is near your route during your travel dates, your guide will make the best effort to take you towards the herds. The migration moves according to rainfall and fresh grass, so its exact location cannot be guaranteed in advance.

The luxury of a private safari is the freedom to stay longer at a good sighting. You can wait for a lion to move, watch elephants interact, photograph a giraffe at sunset or pause quietly beside a river.

Return to camp in the evening for dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Serengeti at Your Own Pace

Wake up in the heart of Serengeti and choose the rhythm for your day with your guide.

You may begin with an early morning game drive, when predators can be active and the light is ideal for photography. Or you may enjoy a slower breakfast at camp before leaving for a late morning drive.

This flexibility is one of the main advantages of a private luxury safari. Your guide can work around your interests rather than a group timetable.

Explore a different part of Central Serengeti, follow the river systems looking for leopards, visit kopjes where lions often rest or drive through open plains in search of cheetahs and large grazing herds.

Optional activities such as a sunrise hot-air balloon safari can be arranged in advance, subject to availability and weather conditions. A balloon safari gives a different view of the plains, with breakfast served after landing.

Return to camp for lunch and a rest during the warmer part of the day, then head out again for an afternoon game drive. The later light brings golden colours to the grassland and often creates excellent photography conditions.

Day 7: Another Serengeti Wildlife Day

Your guide will continue to follow the most promising wildlife areas. You may encounter lion prides, leopards in trees, elephant families, giraffes moving between acacias, zebras in open grassland and hyenas near predator activity.

For photographers, this extra day is valuable. Wildlife behaviour, light and backgrounds change quickly, and a second or third opportunity can make a major difference.

If your safari dates coincide with the migration in Central Serengeti, your guide may focus on herd movement. If the migration is elsewhere, Central Serengeti still offers excellent resident wildlife and strong big-cat viewing.

Return to camp for a final Serengeti dinner. Relax under the stars and enjoy the sounds of the African night.

Day 8: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater

After breakfast, enjoy a final morning game drive as you leave Serengeti National Park and travel back towards Ngorongoro.

The route remains a wildlife drive, so there are opportunities to see animals on the plains before you enter the highlands. You may stop for a picnic lunch or arrive at the crater area in time for lunch at your lodge.

In the afternoon, descend into Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive, or spend the night near the crater and descend early the following morning depending on the selected lodge and travel schedule. For this itinerary, the crater game drive is planned today to ensure a relaxed final departure day.

Ngorongoro Crater is the largest intact volcanic caldera in the world. It contains grasslands, woodland, swamps, freshwater springs and Lake Magadi. This compact mixture of habitats supports a remarkable concentration of wildlife.

You may see lions, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas, jackals, gazelles and water birds. Ngorongoro is also one of Tanzania’s best places to search for black rhinos. Rhinos are rare and no sighting can be promised, but your guide will look for them responsibly using park knowledge and current wildlife information.

After the crater game drive, ascend the rim and drive to your luxury lodge near Karatu or Ngorongoro for dinner and overnight.

Day 9: Ngorongoro Highlands to Arusha

Best Time for a Luxury Tanzania Safari

This safari can be enjoyed throughout the year.

The dry season from June to October is popular because days are generally dry, wildlife is often easier to spot and Tarangire’s elephant viewing can be particularly strong around water sources.

The green season from November to May brings lush scenery, dramatic skies, excellent birdlife and fewer visitors in some areas. Southern Serengeti and Ndutu can be particularly rewarding during the wildebeest calving season, usually around part of December to March depending on rainfall.
