This 4-day Tanzania safari from Zanzibar is a practical and rewarding way to add wildlife, landscapes and a private mainland safari to your Zanzibar beach holiday. The package begins with a domestic flight from Zanzibar to northern Tanzania and visits three memorable destinations: Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara National Park.

It is an excellent short safari for couples, honeymooners, families and travellers who want to experience Tanzania’s famous wildlife without taking a long road journey from Zanzibar. Within four days, you can see elephant herds beneath ancient baobab trees, search for lions and rhinos in the Ngorongoro Crater, and explore Lake Manyara’s forest and Rift Valley scenery.

EKO TANZANIA ADVENTURES arranges this as a private safari. You travel with your own professional driver-guide and a custom 4×4 safari vehicle, allowing the experience to move at your pace. Why Add a Tanzania Safari to Your Zanzibar Holiday?

Zanzibar and northern Tanzania offer two completely different but complementary experiences. Zanzibar is about beaches, ocean air, spice history and relaxation. Northern Tanzania is about wildlife, open landscapes, game drives and evenings in safari lodges or tented camps.

A short fly-in safari gives you both without requiring a complicated itinerary. You leave Zanzibar in the morning, fly to Arusha or Kilimanjaro Airport, meet your driver-guide and begin your wildlife adventure. After several days in the parks, you return to Zanzibar with a fuller Tanzania experience behind you.

This route focuses on parks that are reachable from Arusha without adding the longer drive required for Serengeti. It is therefore a strong option for travellers who have only a few days away from the coast but still want excellent chances to see elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, lions and many other animals.

Day 1: Fly from Zanzibar to Arusha and Visit Tarangire National Park

After breakfast at your Zanzibar hotel, transfer to Zanzibar Airport for your scheduled domestic flight to Arusha Airport or Kilimanjaro International Airport. The exact flight route, airline and departure time will be confirmed in your final itinerary.

On arrival in northern Tanzania, you will be welcomed by your EKO TANZANIA ADVENTURES driver-guide and begin the journey towards Tarangire National Park. The drive usually takes around two to three hours, depending on the airport used, traffic and road conditions.

Tarangire is one of northern Tanzania’s most beautiful wildlife parks. It is known for large elephant herds, towering baobab trees, acacia woodland, open grassland and seasonal wetlands. The Tarangire River is an important water source, especially during drier months, and attracts a variety of animals.

Your game drive begins after entering the park. You may see elephants feeding beneath baobab trees, giraffes browsing on acacias, zebras crossing the tracks, buffaloes, wildebeest, impalas, warthogs and many bird species. Lions, leopards and cheetahs live in the park, although no specific wildlife sighting can be guaranteed.

Enjoy a picnic lunch in an approved area, then continue with an afternoon game drive. Later, travel to your lodge or tented camp near Karatu or Mto wa Mbu for dinner and overnight.

Overnight: Lodge or tented camp near Karatu or Mto wa Mbu
Meals: Lunch and dinner

Day 2: Ngorongoro Crater Safari – Wildlife in a Volcanic Caldera

After an early breakfast, travel to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The road rises into cooler highlands, and the scenery changes from lower, drier country to green volcanic slopes and forested areas.

Arrive at the Ngorongoro Crater rim, where the view opens over a huge volcanic caldera. The crater floor contains grassland, marshes, forest patches and Lake Magadi, all enclosed by steep crater walls. It is one of the most remarkable wildlife landscapes in Africa.

Descend to the crater floor for a game drive. Ngorongoro supports a high concentration of wildlife, including lions, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas, jackals and many birds. Elephants may be seen in the forested areas, while black rhinos live in the conservation area. Rhino sightings depend on visibility, distance and animal movement, so they can never be promised.

Your guide will take time to explore different parts of the crater and explain the ecology of this unique environment. A picnic lunch is normally served at an approved site near a hippo pool before the afternoon game drive continues.

Later, ascend the crater and return to your lodge for dinner and rest.

Overnight: Lodge or tented camp near Karatu or Ngorongoro
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3: Lake Manyara National Park and Return to Arusha

After breakfast, travel to Lake Manyara National Park. Although smaller than Tarangire or Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara offers a very different wildlife setting. The park sits beneath the Great Rift Valley escarpment and contains a mix of groundwater forest, open woodland, grassy areas and lakeshore habitat.

The forest near the park entrance is often home to large troops of baboons and blue monkeys. As the game drive continues, you may see elephants moving through the trees, giraffes, buffaloes, hippos, zebras and many species of birds.

Lake Manyara is particularly rewarding for birdwatchers. Depending on water levels and the season, the lake may attract flamingos, pelicans, storks, herons and other waterbirds. Hornbills, kingfishers, eagles and smaller forest species add further variety.

The park is sometimes associated with tree-climbing lions. Lions do occur in the area, but climbing behaviour is not guaranteed, and your guide will focus on genuine sightings available during the day.

Enjoy lunch before leaving the park and travelling back to Arusha. Check in at your hotel and spend the evening relaxing after three days of game drives and wildlife viewing.

Overnight: Hotel in Arusha
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4: Fly from Arusha Back to Zanzibar

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before transferring to Arusha Airport or Kilimanjaro International Airport for your domestic flight back to Zanzibar.

On arrival, you can be transferred to your beach hotel, Stone Town accommodation or Zanzibar Airport for your onward journey. Many guests choose to add extra nights in Zanzibar after the safari, allowing time to relax by the ocean after the early starts and exciting wildlife days.

This package can also be arranged in reverse, beginning with the safari and ending with a longer Zanzibar beach holiday.

Helpful Packing Tips

Because this trip begins in Zanzibar and continues to the safari parks, pack for both beach and bush conditions. Bring lightweight clothing for warm afternoons, a light jacket or fleece for cool mornings, comfortable closed shoes, sun protection and a hat.

For game drives, neutral-coloured clothing is practical. A small day bag is useful for your camera, binoculars, medication, sunglasses and personal items. If you are travelling with a domestic light aircraft, soft-sided luggage is usually easier to manage, and the airline’s baggage allowance will be confirmed before departure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I start this safari directly from Zanzibar?

Yes. This itinerary is designed specifically for travellers beginning in Zanzibar. EKO TANZANIA ADVENTURES can arrange the domestic flight and airport transfers as part of your confirmed package.

Is four days enough for a Tanzania safari from Zanzibar?

Four days is enough for a rewarding safari if the route is planned carefully. This itinerary focuses on Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara, which can be reached from Arusha without the longer travel time required for Serengeti.

Can this package include Serengeti?

Yes, but adding Serengeti usually requires more days or a fly-in arrangement. For travellers wanting Serengeti, we can recommend a longer itinerary or a dedicated fly-in safari from Zanzibar.

This safari can operate throughout the year. Drier months are often popular for general wildlife viewing, while greener months can offer beautiful scenery, dramatic skies and excellent birdlife. The best travel period depends on your wildlife interests, budget and preferred weather.

Can I return to Zanzibar after the safari?

Yes. This package ends with a domestic flight back to Zanzibar, where you can continue your beach holiday or connect with an onward flight.
