3-Day Tanzania Safari: Essential Northern Circuit Adventure
Explore Tours
This 3-Day Tanzania Safari brings together three very different wildlife destinations in northern Tanzania: Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater. It is an excellent safari for travellers who want more than a quick visit, but do not have a full week available.
Over three days, you will see Tanzania’s famous elephant country in Tarangire, travel through the groundwater forests and lake-edge habitat of Lake Manyara, and spend a full day on the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater. Every park has its own landscape, wildlife patterns and atmosphere, giving this short safari real variety.
EKO Tanzania Adventures runs this as a private safari from Arusha. You will travel in a reliable 4×4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, guided by an experienced local safari driver-guide. The itinerary can be arranged with budget camping, mid-range lodges or luxury accommodation according to your needs.
This is a good choice for couples, families, small groups, first-time visitors to Tanzania and guests combining a safari with a Mount Kilimanjaro climb or Zanzibar beach holiday.

Detailed 3-Day Tanzania Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park
Your 3-Day Tanzania Safari begins in Arusha. In the morning, your EKO Tanzania Adventures driver-guide will collect you from your hotel. Airport collection from Arusha Airport or Kilimanjaro International Airport can also be arranged when your flight schedule allows.
After a short introduction to the safari, you will begin the drive towards Tarangire National Park. The journey normally takes around two to three hours, passing through local towns, farming villages and Maasai landscapes.
Tarangire National Park is one of Tanzania’s most rewarding parks for elephant sightings. It has large elephant herds, old baobab trees and the Tarangire River, which attracts wildlife throughout the year. During the dry season, many animals come close to the river and nearby waterholes, creating excellent game-viewing opportunities.
Once inside the park, your game drive begins. Your guide will follow tracks through woodland, grassland and river areas while searching for wildlife. Elephants are often seen in family groups, with young calves walking beside the adults. You may also see giraffes feeding from acacia trees, zebras and wildebeest grazing in open areas, buffaloes near the river and warthogs moving through the grass.
Tarangire is also home to lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, jackals, impalas, gazelles, baboons and many bird species. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but the park’s mix of habitats makes every game drive interesting.
You will enjoy a packed lunch at a designated picnic site inside the park. After lunch, continue with an afternoon game drive. The later hours often bring softer light for photographs and more movement from animals as the temperature cools.
In the late afternoon, leave Tarangire and drive to your lodge or camp in the Karatu or Mto wa Mbu area. Check in, enjoy dinner and relax after your first safari day.
Meals included: Lunch and dinner
Overnight: Lodge or camp in Karatu / Mto wa Mbu area
Day 2: Lake Manyara National Park Game Drive
After breakfast, depart for Lake Manyara National Park. Although smaller than Serengeti or Tarangire, Lake Manyara has a very different setting and is well worth including in a short Northern Circuit safari.
The park sits along the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment. Its landscape includes groundwater forest, open grassland, acacia woodland and the alkaline Lake Manyara itself. This variety attracts many species of animals and birds.
Your game drive starts in the lush forest zone, where you may see blue monkeys, vervet monkeys and olive baboons. Lake Manyara is known for its large baboon troops, and seeing them move through the trees or along the roadside is often a highlight for guests.
As you continue through the park, look out for giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, wildebeest, hippos and antelopes. Lake Manyara is also famous for its tree-climbing lions. They are not seen every day, and they may be resting elsewhere in the park, but your guide will search the acacia trees and known lion areas.
Birdwatchers enjoy this park because of its large number of bird species. Depending on the season and water level, Lake Manyara may have flamingos, pelicans, storks, herons and many other water birds. Even guests who are not birdwatchers usually enjoy the colour and movement around the lake shore.
You will stop for lunch during the day, then continue the afternoon game drive. The park is scenic rather than rushed: it offers a quieter contrast to Tarangire’s elephant country and the wide open floor of Ngorongoro.
Later in the afternoon, drive back to your accommodation in the Karatu or Ngorongoro area. Enjoy dinner and prepare for an early start the next day.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Lodge or camp in Karatu / Ngorongoro area
Day 3: Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive and Return to Arusha
After an early breakfast, you will drive towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The road climbs into the highlands, where the temperatures are cooler and the views become more dramatic.
At the crater rim, there may be time for a short stop at the viewpoint. Looking down from the rim, you can see the huge crater floor with its grasslands, forest patches and lake. This is one of the most recognisable natural landscapes in Tanzania.
You will then descend approximately 600 metres into the Ngorongoro Crater. The crater was formed when a vast volcano collapsed millions of years ago. Today it is one of Africa’s most concentrated wildlife areas and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Your game drive on the crater floor gives you a strong opportunity to see a wide range of animals. Lions are often seen resting in grasslands or watching herds of zebras and wildebeest. Buffaloes, hyenas, jackals, hippos, gazelles and water birds are common in different parts of the crater.
Ngorongoro is also one of the best places in Tanzania to search for the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and black rhino. Rhinos are protected and remain rare, so their sighting cannot be promised. However, experienced guides use wildlife reports and their knowledge of the area to look for them responsibly.
Elephants inside the crater are often large male bulls with impressive tusks. Near the hippo pool, you may see hippos resting in the water. At Lake Magadi, flamingos may be visible when conditions are suitable.
You will have a picnic lunch inside the crater at an official site. After lunch, continue your final game drive before returning to the crater rim and beginning the drive back to Arusha.
EKO Tanzania Adventures will drop you at your Arusha hotel, Arusha Airport or Kilimanjaro International Airport, depending on your onward plans.
Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Best Time for a 3-Day Tanzania Safari
This Tanzania safari is available all year round.
The dry season from June to October is particularly good for wildlife viewing. Tarangire’s river and waterholes attract many animals, vegetation is less thick and skies are often clear.
The green season from November to May brings greener scenery, beautiful photography conditions and excellent birdlife. The main rainy period is usually from March to May, but safari travel continues and the parks remain rewarding. Ngorongoro Crater has strong wildlife viewing in every season because many animals stay within the crater area throughout the year.
