About the 6-Day Great Migration Safari in Serengeti
The Great Migration is the annual movement of large herds of wildebeest, zebras and gazelles through Tanzania’s Serengeti ecosystem and Kenya’s Maasai Mara ecosystem. The migration is driven by rain and fresh grazing, not by a fixed calendar.
At different times of year, the main herds may be found in different areas:
- December to March: Southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains, often linked with the calving season

Detailed 6-Day Great Migration Safari Itinerary
Day 1 of 6-Day Great Migration Safari in Serengeti : Arusha to Ngorongoro Highlands
Your 6-Day Great Migration Safari begins with pickup from your hotel in Arusha. Meet your EKO Tanzania Adventures driver-guide, receive a safari briefing and begin the journey towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
The drive passes through local towns, farmlands and Maasai country. As you approach the Ngorongoro highlands, the weather becomes cooler and the landscape greener.
Depending on your selected itinerary and travel time, you may visit a scenic viewpoint near the crater rim or arrive directly at your lodge or camp in the Karatu or Ngorongoro area.
This first day is designed to position you well for an early Ngorongoro Crater game drive the following morning. Enjoy dinner and rest before the safari begins in earnest.

Day 2 of 6-Day Great Migration Safari in Serengeti: Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive and Transfer to Serengeti
After an early breakfast, drive to the Ngorongoro Crater rim and descend approximately 600 metres to the crater floor for a morning game drive.
Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and one of Tanzania’s most wildlife-rich areas. Its grasslands, woodland, swamp and lake habitats support lions, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas, jackals and many bird species.
The crater is also one of Tanzania’s best places to look for black rhinos. Rhinos are rare and sightings cannot be guaranteed, but experienced guides know the areas where they are more often seen.
Enjoy a picnic lunch at an official site near the hippo pool. After lunch, ascend the crater rim and continue towards Serengeti National Park.
The exact Serengeti destination depends on the migration location during your travel dates. You may travel towards Southern Serengeti, Central Serengeti, Western Serengeti or Northern Serengeti.
Enjoy game viewing as you enter the Serengeti ecosystem. Arrive at your camp or lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight.

Day 3 of 6-Day Great Migration Safari in Serengeti : Full-Day Great Migration Game Drive
Today is dedicated to tracking the Great Migration. After breakfast, leave camp with a packed lunch for a full-day game drive.
Your guide will select the route according to recent herd movement, weather conditions and information from the field. The goal is to spend meaningful time around wildlife rather than driving rapidly from place to place.
During the calving season in Southern Serengeti and Ndutu, you may see large herds spread across the short-grass plains. This period can also be rewarding for predator sightings because lions, cheetahs, hyenas and jackals are active around the herds.
In Central Serengeti, the migration may pass through open plains and river valleys. This area is also excellent for big cats throughout the year because of its permanent water sources and variety of habitats.
If the herds are in Western Serengeti, game drives may focus on river areas and migration corridors. If they are in Northern Serengeti, the route may concentrate near the Mara River, where river-crossing activity is sometimes possible.
A river crossing can never be guaranteed. Wild animals choose when and where to cross, and some crossings happen quickly while others may not happen during a full day of waiting. Your guide will always explain the situation honestly and help you decide how long to stay at a sighting.
Return to camp in the evening for dinner and overnight.

Day 4 of 6-Day Great Migration Safari in Serengeti : Serengeti Wildlife and Migration Tracking
After breakfast, continue exploring the Serengeti migration area. This additional day gives you more flexibility, which is important because wildlife movement cannot be controlled.
You may start with an early morning game drive, when predators can be more active and the light is good for photography. Lions may be moving after night activity, leopards may still be visible before resting in trees and cheetahs may be scanning the plains for prey.
As you follow the migration, you may see thousands of wildebeest and zebras feeding, resting, moving in long lines or gathering before a river or stream crossing. Watching the interaction between herbivores, predators and scavengers gives a deeper understanding of the Serengeti ecosystem.
The day is also about smaller wildlife moments. You may see elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, warthogs, hippos, mongoose, baboons, ostriches, raptors and colourful birds.
Enjoy a packed lunch in the bush, then continue the afternoon game drive. Your guide will make the most of the available light and wildlife activity before returning to camp.

Day 5 of 6-Day Great Migration Safari in Serengeti : Final Serengeti Game Drive and Transfer to Ngorongoro / Karatu
After breakfast, enjoy a final morning game drive in Serengeti. This is another opportunity to search for migration herds, big cats and any wildlife you may not have seen during the previous days.
Later, begin the drive towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area or Karatu. The route is a game drive in itself, with chances to see wildlife as you leave the Serengeti plains.
Depending on your itinerary and travel season, you may stop at viewpoints or enjoy a picnic lunch along the way. Arrive at your lodge or camp in the afternoon and enjoy a relaxed final evening in the highlands.

Day 6 of 6-Day Great Migration Safari in Serengeti : Karatu to Arusha
After breakfast, begin the drive back to Arusha. You will pass through the northern Tanzania countryside, with time for a stop if needed.
EKO Tanzania Adventures will drop you at your Arusha hotel, Arusha Airport or Kilimanjaro International Airport according to your onward travel arrangements.
For guests continuing to Zanzibar, domestic flight connections can be arranged from Arusha or Kilimanjaro Airport depending on the flight schedule.

Best Time for a Great Migration Safari
The best time depends on the experience you want.
Calving Season: December to March
This is a strong period for guests who want to see large herds on the Southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains. Many wildebeest calves are born during this season, attracting lions, cheetahs, hyenas and other predators.
Western Corridor: April to July
The herds gradually move through Central and Western Serengeti. The scenery is often green after the rains, and wildlife viewing remains strong. Grumeti River crossings can occur, but timing depends entirely on the herds.
Northern Serengeti River Crossings: July to October
