Detailed 7-Day Classic Tanzania Safari: Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Your Tanzania safari begins in the morning with pickup from your hotel in Arusha. Meet your EKO Tanzania Adventures driver-guide, receive a short safari briefing and begin the journey towards Tarangire National Park.

The drive takes approximately two to three hours, passing through local towns, farming areas and Maasai country. As you approach Tarangire, the landscape becomes more open, with baobab trees and dry-season savannah scenery.

After entering the park, begin your first game drive. Tarangire is famous for its elephants. You may see family groups moving through woodland, young calves following their mothers or large bull elephants feeding near the Tarangire River.

The park also has giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, impalas, gazelles, warthogs, baboons and a large variety of birdlife. Lions, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas live in Tarangire, although all wildlife moves freely and sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Enjoy a picnic lunch at a designated site inside the park. Continue with an afternoon game drive through woodland, grassland, swamp and river areas.

In the late afternoon, leave Tarangire and drive to your lodge or camp near Mto wa Mbu or Karatu. Dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Lake Manyara National Park Game Drive

After breakfast, depart for Lake Manyara National Park. This compact park sits at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment and offers a very different environment from Tarangire.

The first part of the game drive takes you through groundwater forest. This lush area is home to olive baboons, blue monkeys, vervet monkeys, bushbucks and many bird species. Lake Manyara is especially known for its large baboon troops, which can often be seen moving along the roads and through the trees.

As you continue, the landscape opens into woodland, grassland and lake-edge areas. Look for giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, wildebeest, hippos and antelopes. Lake Manyara is famous for tree-climbing lions, although they are not seen every day and cannot be guaranteed.

The lake itself attracts water birds. Depending on the season and water conditions, you may see flamingos, pelicans, storks, herons and other birdlife near the shore.

Enjoy a picnic lunch inside the park, then continue with an afternoon game drive before returning to your lodge or camp near Karatu.

Day 3: Karatu to Serengeti National Park

After an early breakfast, begin the journey towards Serengeti National Park. You will travel through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, climbing into the highlands before descending towards the Serengeti plains.

If time and weather allow, stop at a crater-rim viewpoint for a wide view over the Ngorongoro Crater. Continue west towards Serengeti, enjoying wildlife sightings along the route.

As you enter the Serengeti ecosystem, the landscape opens into wide grasslands, rocky kopjes and acacia woodland. The name Serengeti comes from the Maasai word Siringet, often translated as “endless plains.”

Your game drive begins as you travel towards your camp or lodge. Look for lions resting on kopjes, giraffes feeding from acacia trees, elephants moving through the grassland and zebras or wildebeest grazing in groups.

Arrive at your safari camp or lodge in Central Serengeti in the evening. Enjoy dinner and overnight in the heart of the park.

Day 4: Full-Day Serengeti Wildlife Safari

Today is dedicated to exploring Serengeti National Park. After breakfast, depart with a packed lunch for a full-day game drive.

Your guide will choose the route according to wildlife movements, recent sightings, season and weather conditions. Central Serengeti, also known as Seronera, is excellent for year-round wildlife viewing because of its rivers, grasslands, kopjes and woodland.

You may see lions, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas, warthogs, baboons, impalas and gazelles. Serengeti is also known for leopards, often found near riverine trees, and cheetahs, which favour open grassland.

The Great Migration passes through different areas of the Serengeti ecosystem during the year. If the migration is near Central Serengeti during your travel dates, your guide will make the best effort to take you towards the herds. The movement depends on rainfall and grazing conditions, so exact locations can never be guaranteed.

Enjoy a picnic lunch in the bush, then continue the afternoon game drive. Return to camp in the evening for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Another Full Day in Serengeti National Park

A second full day in Serengeti gives you more time to enjoy wildlife without rushing. Early morning is often especially rewarding because predators can be active after nightfall and the light is good for photographs.

Your guide may take you to a different part of Central Serengeti, follow animal tracks near the river valleys or return to a strong wildlife sighting from the previous day. Every safari day is different because animals move naturally.

Look for lions in the grasslands, leopards in acacia or sausage trees, cheetahs scanning open plains and hyenas near active predator areas. You may also see elephants, giraffes, ostriches, jackals, mongooses and many bird species.

This day allows you to slow down at good sightings. Rather than taking a quick photograph and leaving, you can watch animal behaviour—lions interacting, elephants feeding, giraffes moving through trees or zebras gathering in herds.

Enjoy another picnic lunch in the park and continue with the afternoon game drive. Return to camp before or around sunset.

Day 6: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Highlands

After breakfast, leave Serengeti National Park and enjoy a final morning game drive as you travel east towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

This is not simply a transfer day. There are still opportunities to see wildlife along the route, including lions, zebras, giraffes, elephants and any animals you may have missed during your Serengeti stay.

The road gradually rises from the plains into the cooler Ngorongoro highlands. You may see Maasai communities and livestock in the conservation area, where people and wildlife share the wider landscape under conservation regulations.

Arrive at your lodge or camp in Karatu or near the Ngorongoro Crater in the afternoon. Relax, enjoy dinner and prepare for an early start into the crater the next morning.

Day 7: Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive and Return to Arusha

After an early breakfast, drive to the Ngorongoro Crater rim. If the weather is clear, you may stop briefly at a viewpoint before descending approximately 600 metres to the crater floor.

Ngorongoro Crater is the largest intact volcanic caldera in the world. The floor has grassland, woodland, lake areas, swamps and freshwater springs, which support a high concentration of wildlife throughout the year.

You may see lions, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas, jackals, warthogs, gazelles and many birds. The crater is also one of Tanzania’s best places to look for black rhinos. Rhinos are rare and may be far from the road, but your guide will search responsibly using their experience and current wildlife information.

Ngorongoro offers a genuine chance to look for the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. Leopards are naturally difficult to see, so no safari company can guarantee every member of the Big Five.

Enjoy a picnic lunch at an official site near the hippo pool. After the game drive, ascend the crater rim and begin the journey back to Arusha.
