About Arusha National Park
Arusha National Park may be smaller than Serengeti, Tarangire or Ngorongoro, but it has an impressive variety of landscapes. The park stretches from the lower slopes of Mount Meru to the Momella Lakes, forested areas and open plains.
Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest mountain, dominates the park. On a clear day, its volcanic slopes create a dramatic backdrop for wildlife photographs. In some parts of the park, you may also see Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.
The Momella Lakes are shallow alkaline lakes that attract flamingos and other water birds. The lakes can change in colour depending on water conditions, algae and light. Their open setting gives the park a peaceful and scenic quality.
Arusha National Park is also one of the best places in northern Tanzania to look for black-and-white colobus monkeys. These distinctive monkeys have long white tails and are often found in the forest canopy. They are not commonly seen in the larger savannah parks, making them a special part of this safari.
Detailed 1-Day Arusha National Park Safari Itinerary
Morning: Pickup from Arusha and Drive to the Park
Your day begins in the morning with pickup from your hotel in Arusha. Meet your EKO Tanzania Adventures safari driver-guide and begin the short drive towards Arusha National Park.
The park is close to town, which means you spend less time driving and more time enjoying the safari. As you approach the gate, the scenery changes from city streets and villages to greener slopes and forested landscapes beneath Mount Meru.
After completing park entry procedures, begin your game drive.
Morning Game Drive: Forest Wildlife and Giraffes
The first part of your game drive takes you through forest and open woodland. This is a good area to look for black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, baboons and a wide range of birdlife.
Your guide will scan the trees and forest edge for movement. Colobus monkeys can be difficult to spot at first because they often sit high in the branches, but their bright white tails and dark fur stand out once you see them.
As the route moves into more open areas, look for giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, warthogs and waterbucks. Arusha National Park is one of the best parks near Arusha for seeing giraffes in scenic surroundings, often with Mount Meru in the background.
Lions and leopards are not the main focus of this park. Arusha National Park is better for guests who appreciate landscapes, forest wildlife, giraffes, birds and a more relaxed game-drive experience.
Midday: Momella Lakes and Picnic Lunch
Continue towards the Momella Lakes. These shallow lakes attract flamingos, pelicans, storks, herons and many other water birds. The number of flamingos changes with water level and season, but the lakes are always a beautiful part of the park.
Stop at a designated picnic site for lunch. EKO Tanzania Adventures will provide a packed lunch and drinking water.
Enjoy the scenery, take photographs and listen to your guide’s explanation of the park’s different habitats. Because the park is compact, you may see forest, open grassland and lakes within the same morning.
Afternoon: Game Drive, Optional Walking Safari or Canoeing
After lunch, continue with the afternoon game drive. Your guide will choose the route according to wildlife sightings, weather and your interests.
You may revisit areas where giraffes, buffaloes or monkeys were seen earlier, or explore other tracks around the lakes and lower slopes of Mount Meru.
For guests who want a different experience, an optional walking safari can be arranged in advance. A walking safari is led by an armed park ranger and allows you to experience the park from the ground. You may walk through open areas while learning about animal tracks, plants, birds and smaller wildlife.
Canoeing on Momella Lake may also be available, depending on water levels, weather and park operations. Canoeing offers a quiet way to observe water birds, buffaloes near the shore and the scenery around the lake. It must be booked in advance and is not automatically included in the standard day safari.
In the late afternoon, leave the park and return to your hotel in Arusha.

Best Time to Visit Arusha National Park
Arusha National Park can be visited throughout the year.
The drier months, generally from June to October and January to early March, are often good for game drives because the roads are easier and wildlife can be easier to spot in thinner vegetation.
The greener months from November to May are especially beautiful for forest scenery, flowers and birdwatching. The Momella Lakes can be very rewarding for water birds during this period, although rain may affect some tracks.
Morning departures are recommended because wildlife is often active and mountain views are more likely to be clear before clouds form.
