Explore Tours
1-Day Ngorongoro Crater Safari : Experience one of Tanzania’s most remarkable wildlife areas on this 1-Day Ngorongoro Crater Safari from Arusha. The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and one of the best places in East Africa to see a wide range of wildlife in a single game drive.
The crater floor is home to lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas, jackals and many bird species. It is also one of Tanzania’s strongest places to look for the endangered black rhino. This makes Ngorongoro an excellent choice for travellers who want a short safari with a genuine opportunity to search for the Big Five.
EKO Tanzania Adventures arranges this as a private full-day safari. You will leave Arusha early in the morning, travel through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, descend approximately 600 metres into the crater for a game drive, enjoy a picnic lunch and return to Arusha in the evening.
It is a long day, but it is worth it for guests who have limited time and want to experience the wildlife, scenery and atmosphere of the Ngorongoro Crater.

About 1-Day Ngorongoro Crater Safari
Ngorongoro Crater is a huge volcanic caldera formed millions of years ago when a large volcano collapsed. Today, the crater floor covers approximately 260 square kilometres and is surrounded by steep crater walls rising up to 600 metres above the plains below.
The crater is part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the most important protected areas in Tanzania because it supports a high concentration of wildlife in a relatively compact environment.
The crater floor includes open grasslands, acacia woodland, swamps, freshwater springs and Lake Magadi, a seasonal soda lake. These different habitats support many species throughout the year.
Unlike the Great Migration, which moves through the wider Serengeti ecosystem according to rain and grass conditions, many animals remain in and around the crater throughout the year. This is why Ngorongoro offers consistently strong wildlife viewing in every season.
Detailed 1-Day Ngorongoro Crater Safari Itinerary
Early Morning: Departure from Arusha
Your Ngorongoro Crater day trip begins very early in the morning with pickup from your hotel in Arusha. An early start is essential because the drive to Ngorongoro is long and you want to spend as much time as possible inside the crater.
Meet your professional EKO Tanzania Adventures safari driver-guide and begin the journey west from Arusha. The road passes through small towns, farming areas and the highland landscapes of northern Tanzania.
As you approach the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the scenery becomes greener and cooler. The route rises into the crater highlands, where clouds, forest and open views create a very different feeling from the dry plains below.
Morning: Ngorongoro Crater Rim and Descent
After arriving at the conservation area, continue towards the crater rim. If weather and timing allow, stop at a viewpoint before descending. From the rim, you can look down over the crater floor, with grasslands, woodland, lake areas and wildlife far below.
The descent road drops approximately 600 metres from the rim to the crater floor. The drive itself is steep and winding, but it is one of the most memorable parts of the safari. Your guide will drive carefully as the landscape opens in front of you.
Once on the crater floor, begin your game drive. Ngorongoro is known for concentrated wildlife, so your guide will look for animals from the start.
You may see zebras and wildebeest grazing on open plains, buffaloes moving in groups, lions resting in long grass, hyenas patrolling the landscape and elephants feeding near woodland areas. Your guide will use park knowledge and updates from other guides to search for the best wildlife activity on the day.
Midday: Picnic Lunch near the Hippo Pool
Around midday, stop at an official picnic site near a hippo pool. EKO Tanzania Adventures will provide a packed lunch and drinking water.
The picnic site offers a chance to rest after the morning game drive while observing hippos in the water nearby. Keep in mind that this is a wildlife area, so always follow your guide’s safety instructions and remain within the designated picnic zone.
After lunch, continue the game drive across a different section of the crater floor.
Afternoon: Crater Wildlife Game Drive and Return to Arusha
The afternoon game drive gives you more time to search for wildlife and enjoy the crater’s varied habitats.
You may visit areas close to Lake Magadi, where flamingos can sometimes be seen when water levels and conditions are right. The lake attracts water birds and adds another colour to the crater landscape.
Your guide may also search for black rhinos. Ngorongoro is one of Tanzania’s best places for rhino sightings, but rhinos are rare and often remain at a distance. No safari company can guarantee a rhino sighting, but the crater offers a genuine chance to look for these protected animals.
Elephants inside Ngorongoro are often large bull elephants with impressive tusks. You may also see lions hunting or resting, buffaloes near swamps, zebras and wildebeest on the grasslands, and hippos in water pools.
Later in the afternoon, begin the ascent back to the crater rim. From there, start the drive back to Arusha. You will arrive at your hotel in the evening after a full day of safari travel and wildlife viewing.
Wildlife You May See in Ngorongoro Crater
Ngorongoro Crater offers some of the strongest wildlife viewing in Tanzania. Animals you may see include:
- Lions
- African buffaloes
- African elephants
- Black rhinos
- Leopards
- Zebras
- Wildebeest
- Hippos
- Spotted hyenas
- Jackals
- Warthogs
- Gazelles and other antelopes
- Flamingos, ostriches, eagles and other birdlife
The Big Five are present in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. However, leopards are naturally difficult to see and black rhinos are rare, so sightings cannot be promised.
Best Time to Visit Ngorongoro Crater
Ngorongoro Crater can be visited throughout the year because wildlife remains in the crater in every season.
The dry season from June to October generally has clear skies, dry roads and easier wildlife viewing through shorter grass. This is a popular time to visit.
The green season from November to May offers lush landscapes, dramatic skies and good birdlife. Rain can occur, particularly from March to May, but game drives continue and the crater remains rich in wildlife.
Because this is a day trip from Arusha, an early start is recommended in every season.
