About Materuni Waterfalls

Materuni Waterfalls is one of the best-known natural day-trip attractions near Moshi. The waterfall sits in a green valley beneath the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. It is surrounded by forest, cultivated land and steep rocky cliffs.

The waterfall is approximately 70 to 80 metres high, depending on where it is measured. Its water comes from streams flowing down from the mountain slopes. During and after rainy periods, the falls can be especially powerful. During drier months, the water flow may be lower, but the walk, scenery and pool remain enjoyable.

The path to the waterfall passes through village land and farmland. Your local guide will explain the plants, crops and traditions of the area. You may see banana trees, coffee plants, avocado trees, small vegetable gardens and local homes along the way.

The walk is not a technical hike, but the final part of the trail can be uneven, muddy or slippery after rain. Good walking shoes are recommended. The pace can be adjusted for families and guests who prefer a slower walk.

About the Materuni Coffee Experience

The Materuni coffee experience is a hands-on introduction to traditional coffee production in the Kilimanjaro region. Coffee is an important crop in the area, and many local families grow coffee alongside bananas and other food crops.

During the experience, you will learn how coffee moves from a fresh red cherry on the plant to a drink in your cup. Local hosts will explain and demonstrate the traditional process, which may include picking, peeling, washing, drying, roasting and grinding coffee beans.

One of the most enjoyable parts is the roasting and grinding process. Coffee beans are often roasted over a simple fire, then ground by hand. The activity is usually accompanied by local songs and shared participation, creating a relaxed and social atmosphere.

At the end, you will taste freshly prepared Materuni coffee. It is a simple but meaningful way to understand a local product that has connected the Kilimanjaro region to travellers and markets for generations.

Detailed 1-Day Materuni Waterfalls and Coffee Tour Itinerary

Morning: Pickup from Moshi and Drive to Materuni Village

Your day begins in the morning with pickup from your hotel in Moshi. The drive to Materuni Village usually takes around 30 to 45 minutes, depending on your hotel location and road conditions.

As you leave Moshi, the scenery becomes greener and more rural. On clear mornings, you may have views of Mount Kilimanjaro rising above the town and surrounding farms. The mountain is sometimes hidden by clouds, especially later in the day, so morning is often the best time to look for views.

On arrival in Materuni Village, meet your local guide. The guide will give a short introduction to the village, the walking route and the day’s activities. You will also complete any required village or visitor registration.

Materuni is part of the Chagga homeland. The Chagga people have lived around Mount Kilimanjaro’s fertile lower slopes for generations. Agriculture, especially bananas, coffee and small-scale farming, remains an important part of life in this region.

Late Morning: Guided Walk to Materuni Waterfalls

Begin your guided walk through the village and surrounding farmland. The walk is an important part of the experience rather than simply a route to the waterfall. Along the way, your guide may point out coffee plants, banana varieties, local herbs, fruit trees and traditional farming practices.

The trail gradually leads down into a green valley. You may hear the waterfall before seeing it, especially when water levels are high. As you reach the viewpoint, the cliff and waterfall come into view.

Take time for photographs and enjoy the sound and cool air around the falls. The area is particularly refreshing on warm days in Moshi.

If the conditions are safe and you would like to swim, you can enter the natural pool below the waterfall. The water comes from the mountain and is cold, so swimming is optional. Bring a swimsuit and towel if you would like to take part. Your guide will advise whether the water level and conditions are suitable on the day.

After spending time at the waterfall, begin the walk back to Materuni Village. The return walk includes uphill sections, but the pace can be adjusted. Stop whenever needed for water, photographs or a short rest.

Afternoon: Chagga Coffee Tour and Local Lunch

After returning to the village, join the coffee-making experience. You will visit a local coffee farm or family setting where the hosts introduce you to the coffee plants and explain how coffee is grown in this area.

You may take part in preparing coffee using traditional methods. This can include removing coffee beans from the fruit, roasting them over a fire, pounding or grinding them by hand and preparing the final drink. The activity is interactive and gives you a closer connection to the people who grow the coffee.

A local lunch will be served during the visit. Meals may include Tanzanian dishes such as rice, bananas, beans, vegetables, chicken or other seasonal local food. Vegetarian meals can be arranged with advance notice.

After lunch, enjoy a cup of the coffee you helped prepare. You will have time to relax, speak with your hosts and take photographs before leaving the village.

Late Afternoon: Return to Moshi

In the late afternoon, meet your driver for the return journey to Moshi. You will be dropped at your hotel, ready to relax after a day of walking, village life, mountain scenery and coffee.

For guests departing from Moshi or Kilimanjaro International Airport, EKO Tanzania Adventures can help arrange the timing around your onward plans. Please advise us in advance if you have a flight or transfer to catch.

Why Choose This Materuni Day Trip?

Materuni is a good choice for guests who want something more personal than a standard sightseeing stop. It brings together nature, local culture and food in one day without requiring long-distance travel from Moshi.

The waterfall offers a real outdoor experience, while the coffee tour gives you a practical and enjoyable introduction to life on Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes. It is also a good way to recover gently after a safari or before starting a Kilimanjaro climb.

This trip is not designed as a rushed stop. EKO Tanzania Adventures arranges the day at a comfortable pace, allowing time to walk, ask questions, take photographs and enjoy the coffee experience.

Best Time to Visit Materuni Waterfalls

Materuni can be visited throughout the year.

The wetter months generally bring stronger water flow at the waterfall and greener surroundings. However, the trail can be muddier after rain, so suitable shoes are important.

During drier months, walking conditions are often easier and the weather can be clearer for Mount Kilimanjaro views. The waterfall may have less water than during the rainy season, but the trip remains worthwhile because of the village walk, coffee experience and landscape.

Morning departures are recommended because the weather is often cooler and there is a better chance of seeing Kilimanjaro before cloud cover builds around the summit.
