2-Day Tanzania Safari: Tarangire & Ngorongoro Crater Highlights
Explore Tours
2-Day Tanzania Safari : A short time in Tanzania does not mean you have to miss the real safari experience. This 2-Day Tanzania Safari takes you to two of the Northern Circuit’s strongest wildlife areas: Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater. It is a well-planned option for guests who want proper game drives, beautiful landscapes and excellent wildlife viewing within a limited schedule.
The safari begins and ends in Arusha. On the first day, you will explore Tarangire National Park, known for its large elephant herds, giant baobab trees and wide open landscapes. The second day is spent inside the Ngorongoro Crater, where the concentration of wildlife gives you a strong chance of seeing lions, buffaloes, zebras, hippos, hyenas and, with luck, the endangered black rhino.
EKO Tanzania Adventures arranges this trip as a private safari. You travel in a custom 4×4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, allowing you to stand safely and enjoy clear views during game drives. Your driver-guide knows the parks, wildlife movements and the best places to stop without rushing your experience.
This itinerary suits couples, friends, families, solo travellers, business visitors and guests who are adding a safari to a longer Kilimanjaro or Zanzibar holiday. Accommodation can be arranged as budget camping, a comfortable mid-range lodge or a luxury lodge, depending on your preferred style and budget.

Why Choose This 2-Day Tanzania Safari?
Tarangire and Ngorongoro make a very good combination for a short Tanzania safari because each destination offers something different.
Tarangire National Park is widely known for elephants. During a game drive, it is common to see large family groups moving through the grassland or gathering near the Tarangire River. The park also has giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, impalas, baboons, warthogs and many bird species. Lions and leopards are present as well, although every wildlife sighting depends on nature and timing.
Ngorongoro Crater is different. It is a huge volcanic caldera with a compact wildlife area on its floor. The crater has grassland, woodland, lakes, swamps and water sources that support animals throughout the year. This gives guests a very rewarding game-drive day and makes Ngorongoro one of the best places in Tanzania to look for the Big Five.
The itinerary is short but it is not simply a long drive with a few photos. It is designed to give you two meaningful game drives in two iconic safari areas.
Detailed 2-Day Tanzania Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park
Your safari starts in the morning with collection from your hotel in Arusha. If your arrival time works with the itinerary, EKO Tanzania Adventures can also arrange collection from Arusha Airport or Kilimanjaro International Airport.
Meet your professional safari driver-guide, load your luggage into the 4×4 Land Cruiser and begin the journey towards Tarangire National Park. The drive normally takes around two to three hours from Arusha. On the way, you will pass through local towns, farming areas and Maasai country, with views of open Tanzania landscapes.
After arriving at the park gate, your Tarangire game drive begins.
Tarangire has a character of its own. The ancient baobab trees stand across the landscape, while the Tarangire River attracts animals, especially during the drier months. Elephants are one of the main reasons travellers choose this park. You may see young calves walking close to their mothers, large bulls feeding in the woodland or whole herds crossing the safari tracks.
Your guide will drive slowly through different parts of the park, looking for wildlife and explaining what you are seeing. Tarangire is home to many grazing animals, including zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, gazelles and impalas. These animals attract predators such as lions, leopards and cheetahs. You may also spot giraffes browsing on acacia trees, playful baboons along the road and colourful birds around the swamps.
You will stop for a packed lunch at a designated picnic area inside the park. After lunch, continue with an afternoon game drive. The light later in the day is often good for photographs, and animals can become more active as temperatures reduce.
In the late afternoon, leave Tarangire and continue to the Karatu area or nearby accommodation, depending on the lodge or camp selected for your safari. Check in, enjoy a warm dinner and rest before the Ngorongoro Crater adventure the following morning.
Meals included: Lunch and dinner
Overnight: Lodge or camp in Karatu / Ngorongoro area
Day 2: Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive and Return to Arusha
An early start is important today. After breakfast, you will drive towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The journey takes you up into the crater highlands, where the air is cooler and the scenery changes from open plains to forested slopes.
Before descending into the crater, your guide may stop at the rim viewpoint. From here, you can look down into the vast crater floor, with its open grasslands, lake and woodland below. It is one of Tanzania’s most dramatic views.
You will then descend the steep crater road, approximately 600 metres down to the floor. Once inside, your full game drive begins.
Ngorongoro Crater is often described as a natural wildlife enclosure, but it is a wild ecosystem where animals move freely. The floor supports large populations of zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, gazelles, hippos and hyenas. Lions are regularly seen in the grasslands, especially around areas where herbivores gather. Elephants in the crater are often mature bulls, and their large tusks make them particularly impressive to see.
One of the main reasons guests visit the crater is the chance of spotting black rhino. Rhinos are rare, so no guide can promise a sighting, but Ngorongoro remains one of the best areas in northern Tanzania to search for them. Your guide will keep in touch with other guides and follow park information to improve your chances.
You may also visit the hippo pool, where hippos rest in the water during the day. At Lake Magadi, you may see flamingos when conditions are right. The crater’s mixture of habitats means each part of the game drive can feel different.
A picnic lunch will be served at an official picnic site inside the crater. After lunch, continue with a final wildlife drive before ascending the crater rim.
Later, begin your return drive to Arusha. You will be dropped at your hotel, Arusha Airport or Kilimanjaro International Airport according to your travel arrangements.
Meals included: Breakfast and lunch
Wildlife You May See
This 2-Day Tanzania Safari offers the chance to see a wide range of African wildlife. Common sightings may include:
- African elephants
- Lions
- African buffaloes
- Zebras
- Wildebeest
- Giraffes
- Hippos
- Spotted hyenas
- Warthogs
- Baboons
- Impalas and gazelles
- Ostriches and other birdlife
Leopards, cheetahs and black rhinos are possible sightings, but wildlife is free-ranging and cannot be guaranteed. That is part of what makes each Tanzania safari genuine and different.
Best Time to Travel
This safari can be done throughout the year.
From June to October, Tanzania’s dry season, Tarangire is especially rewarding because many animals gather around water sources. The weather is generally dry, roads are easier to travel and wildlife can be easier to see through thinner vegetation.
From November to May, the landscape becomes greener and birdlife is excellent. There may be rain at times, especially during March, April and May, but safari trips continue and the scenery is beautiful. Ngorongoro Crater offers reliable wildlife viewing in every season because many animals remain within the crater area year-round.
