About 4-Day Zanzibar Beach Escape

Zanzibar is an island destination off Tanzania’s coast in the Indian Ocean. It is known for clear water, coral reefs, beaches, spice farms and Stone Town, the historic centre of Zanzibar City.

The island has several beach areas, each with a different feel.

Nungwi and Kendwa in the north are popular for swimming because the tides have less effect on the beach than on the east coast. They offer clear water, sunset views, restaurants and a wide range of beach hotels.

Paje and Jambiani on the east coast are known for long beaches, relaxed village atmosphere and water sports such as kitesurfing. The tides are more noticeable here, creating broad sandy areas at low tide.

Matemwe and the north-east coast are quieter and can be suitable for guests looking for a more peaceful beach stay, with access to snorkeling excursions around Mnemba Atoll.

EKO Tanzania Adventures will recommend the most suitable beach area based on whether you want swimming, nightlife, privacy, water sports, family facilities or a luxury retreat.

Detailed 4-Day Zanzibar Beach Escape Itinerary

Day 1 of 4-Day Zanzibar Beach Escape: Arrival in Zanzibar – Transfer to Your Beach Hotel

Arrive at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar. An EKO Tanzania Adventures representative will meet you and provide a private transfer to your selected beach hotel.

The drive time depends on your hotel location. Northern beaches such as Nungwi and Kendwa are farther from the airport, while Stone Town and some east-coast locations may be closer.

As you travel across the island, you will pass local villages, coconut palms, small shops and tropical countryside. On arrival at your hotel, check in and settle into your room.

The rest of the day is free for relaxation. Walk along the beach, swim in the ocean, enjoy the pool or simply recover from your journey with a cold drink and sea view.

In the evening, enjoy dinner at your hotel or a nearby beach restaurant.

Meals included: Dinner, depending on your selected accommodation plan
Overnight: Beach hotel or resort in Zanzibar

Day 2 of 4-Day Zanzibar Beach Escape: Free Beach Day and Optional Ocean Activities

Wake up to the sound of the ocean and enjoy breakfast at your hotel. Today is free for you to enjoy Zanzibar at your own pace.

Spend the morning on the beach, swimming, relaxing in the sun or reading under a palm tree. The water is usually warm throughout the year, although beach conditions and tides vary by location.

For guests staying in Nungwi or Kendwa, the beach is often suitable for swimming for much of the day. Guests staying on the east coast may enjoy walking along the wide beach at low tide, watching local seaweed farming or joining a water-sport activity.

Optional activities can be arranged in advance or locally, depending on weather and availability:

  • Snorkeling trip to coral reefs
  • Mnemba Atoll snorkeling excursion
  • Scuba diving
  • Sunset dhow cruise
  • Kayaking or paddleboarding
  • Kitesurfing lesson in Paje
  • Deep-sea fishing excursion
  • Beach massage or spa treatment

A sunset dhow cruise is a popular option for couples and honeymooners. Traditional wooden dhows sail along the coast in the late afternoon, often with drinks, snacks and music depending on the operator.

Return to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Meals included: Breakfast and dinner, depending on your selected accommodation plan
Overnight: Beach hotel or resort in Zanzibar

Day 3 of 4-Day Zanzibar Beach Escape: Stone Town Guided Tour and Beach Relaxation

After breakfast, take a private transfer to Stone Town for a guided walking tour.

Stone Town is the historic heart of Zanzibar City and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its narrow streets, carved wooden doors, old houses, mosques, markets and waterfront reflect centuries of African, Arab, Indian and European influence.

Your guide will lead you through the historic streets and explain Zanzibar’s trading history, Swahili culture and role in the spice trade. You may visit or pass landmarks such as the Old Fort, House of Wonders area, Darajani Market, the Anglican Cathedral area and the former slave market memorial site.

Stone Town is also a good place to shop for spices, local textiles, handmade crafts, paintings and souvenirs. Your guide can help you find reliable places and explain local prices, but there is no pressure to buy.

After the tour, enjoy lunch in Stone Town or at a selected restaurant before returning to your beach hotel.

The afternoon is free for swimming, relaxing or enjoying another optional activity. In the evening, enjoy your final Zanzibar dinner at the hotel or a beachside restaurant.

Meals included: Breakfast and dinner, depending on your selected accommodation plan
Overnight: Beach hotel or resort in Zanzibar

Day 4 of 4-Day Zanzibar Beach Escape: Beach Morning and Departure

After breakfast, enjoy your final morning in Zanzibar. Depending on your flight time, you may have time for a final swim, beach walk or relaxed coffee with an ocean view.

Check out from the hotel and meet your EKO Tanzania Adventures driver for your private transfer to Zanzibar Airport.

If you are travelling onward to mainland Tanzania, Kenya, another country or returning home, we can arrange the transfer according to your flight schedule.

Meals included: Breakfast

Optional Zanzibar Activities

This four-day beach holiday can be customised with one or more optional activities.

Spice Farm Tour

Zanzibar is often called the Spice Island because of its long history of growing cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, black pepper and tropical fruits. A Spice Farm Tour allows you to see, smell and taste spices growing in the countryside.

Prison Island Boat Trip

Prison Island, also called Changuu Island, is a short boat ride from Stone Town. It is known for its giant tortoises, old prison buildings and clear-water snorkeling areas.

Mnemba Atoll Snorkeling

Mnemba Atoll is one of Zanzibar’s best-known snorkeling areas. Trips usually depart from the north-east coast and can offer opportunities to see colourful fish, coral and, occasionally, dolphins.

Sunset Dhow Cruise

A sunset dhow cruise is a relaxed evening activity, especially popular with couples. It offers sea views, traditional sailing atmosphere and a chance to watch the sky change colour over the Indian Ocean.

Jozani Forest Tour

Jozani Forest is home to the Zanzibar red colobus monkey, a species found only on Zanzibar. It can be combined with other island activities for guests who want some nature and wildlife beyond the beach.

Best Time to Visit Zanzibar

Zanzibar can be visited throughout the year.

The drier months, generally from June to October and January to February, are popular for beach holidays. These periods often bring sunny weather, good swimming conditions and clear ocean views.

The wetter periods are usually around March to May and November. Rain may occur, but Zanzibar can still be enjoyable, especially for travellers looking for quieter hotels and greener island scenery.

For snorkeling and diving, sea conditions vary by coast and season. EKO Tanzania Adventures can advise on the best beach location and activity choices for your travel dates.

Accommodation Options

Budget beach hotel: Comfortable simple rooms near the beach, suitable for travellers who want a lower-cost island stay.

Mid-range beach resort: Comfortable rooms, restaurant, pool or beach facilities, and a relaxed holiday setting.

Luxury beach resort or boutique hotel: Spacious rooms or villas, private beach areas, spa facilities, quality dining and personalised service.

We will recommend suitable hotels based on your budget, preferred beach area and travel dates.
