6-Day Kilimanjaro Climb: Classic Machame Route

Explore Tours

6-Day Kilimanjaro Climb: Classic Machame Route is one of the most scenic ways to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 metres. Machame is often called the “Whiskey Route” because it is more demanding than the Marangu Route, but it rewards climbers with a varied and beautiful journey through rainforest, moorland, volcanic rock landscapes and the high-altitude summit zone.

This route approaches Kilimanjaro from the south and descends by a different trail on the mountain’s southeastern side. That means you see more varied landscapes than on routes that use the same path for both ascent and descent. The trek passes through Machame Camp, Shira Camp, Lava Tower, Barranco Camp, Karanga Camp, Barafu Camp and finally Uhuru Peak before descending to Mweka Gate.

The six-day Machame itinerary includes the important acclimatisation principle of climbing high and sleeping lower. On Day 3, you trek up to Lava Tower at around 4,630 metres before descending to Barranco Camp at approximately 3,960 metres. This helps your body begin adjusting to the thinner air before the summit attempt.

EKO Tanzania Adventures provides professional local mountain guides, assistant guides, cooks and porters for the climb. Our team takes safety seriously, monitors climbers daily and supports each guest throughout the mountain journey. The route is physically demanding, but with proper preparation, suitable equipment and a steady pace, it is a rewarding way to experience Kilimanjaro.

About the Machame Route

Machame Route is one of the most popular Kilimanjaro climbing routes because of its scenery and varied trail. It is a camping route, meaning you sleep in mountain tents rather than huts. The mountain crew sets up your tent, prepares meals and carries the main equipment, while you carry a daypack with essential items such as water, rain gear, warm layers and personal medication.

The route is more physically demanding than Marangu because of the terrain, longer trekking days and the Barranco Wall. It is not technical climbing, and you do not need ropes or mountaineering experience, but you should be prepared for steep sections, uneven paths, cold conditions and high altitude.

Altitude is the main challenge on Kilimanjaro. Fitness is important, but even very fit people can be affected by altitude. Your guides will check your oxygen level and general condition regularly. They will encourage you to walk slowly, eat well, drink enough water and report symptoms early.

Detailed 6-Day Kilimanjaro Climb: Classic Machame Route Itinerary

Day 1 of 6-Day Kilimanjaro Climb: Classic Machame Route : Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Your Kilimanjaro climb begins with pickup from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. You will be transferred to Machame Gate, located on the southern side of Mount Kilimanjaro.

At the gate, your guide will assist with registration at Kilimanjaro National Park. The team will check your equipment, introduce you to the mountain crew and make sure you have everything needed in your daypack before the trek begins.

The first day is a walk through lush montane rainforest. The trail can be muddy and slippery, particularly after rain, so waterproof hiking boots and gaiters are useful. The forest is rich in vegetation, with tall trees, ferns, moss and occasional sightings of black-and-white colobus monkeys or blue monkeys.

The trek gradually climbs through the forest towards Machame Camp. You will take regular breaks and walk at a controlled pace. Arrive at camp in the afternoon, where your tents will already be set up by the crew.

Enjoy a hot meal, warm drink and early rest. Your first night on the mountain is at approximately 2,835 metres.

Elevation: 1,800m to 2,835m
Distance: Approximately 11 km
Walking time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Meals included: Lunch and dinner
Overnight: Machame Camp

Day 2 of 6-Day Kilimanjaro Climb: Classic Machame Route : Machame Camp to Shira Camp

After breakfast, leave the rainforest and enter the moorland zone. The vegetation becomes shorter and the views open up as you climb higher above the forest.

The route rises over rocky ridges and open slopes. As the weather clears, you may see Mount Meru in the distance and the vast landscape below Kilimanjaro. This is often the first day that climbers feel fully surrounded by the mountain environment.

The climb is steady, and your guide will remind you to maintain a slow pace. The Swahili phrase “pole pole” means slowly, and it is one of the most important principles on Kilimanjaro. Walking slowly gives your body time to adapt to altitude and helps preserve energy for the following days.

Arrive at Shira Camp, located on the Shira Plateau at approximately 3,840 metres. The plateau is an old volcanic caldera and offers wide views across the mountain. Temperatures can be much colder here than at Machame Camp, especially after sunset.

After lunch, you may take a short acclimatisation walk if your guide recommends it. Return to camp for dinner and overnight rest.

Elevation: 2,835m to 3,840m
Distance: Approximately 5 km
Walking time: 4–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Shira Camp

Day 3 of 6-Day Kilimanjaro Climb: Classic Machame Route : Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

This is one of the most important acclimatisation days on the Machame Route.

After breakfast, trek east across open moorland and alpine desert towards Lava Tower. The route climbs gradually, and the landscape becomes more dramatic. Vegetation becomes sparse, with volcanic rocks, dry slopes and distant views of Kibo Peak.

Lava Tower stands at approximately 4,630 metres. You will reach this high point around midday and have lunch nearby. Some climbers may feel the effects of altitude here, such as headache, reduced appetite or tiredness. Your guide will monitor the group and make sure everyone is moving safely.

After lunch, descend to Barranco Camp at approximately 3,960 metres. Although you end the day lower than Lava Tower, the climb to the higher point helps support acclimatisation. This “climb high, sleep low” approach is one of the reasons the Machame Route is considered a better option than a very direct ascent.

The descent towards Barranco brings a major change in scenery. The Barranco Valley is striking, with giant groundsels, senecio plants, volcanic cliffs and views towards the Barranco Wall.

Arrive at Barranco Camp in the afternoon. This is one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic campsites. Enjoy dinner and rest.

Elevation: 3,840m to 4,630m to 3,960m
Distance: Approximately 10 km
Walking time: 6–8 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert to semi-desert
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Barranco Camp

Day 4 of 6-Day Kilimanjaro Climb: Classic Machame Route : Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

After breakfast, begin the day by climbing the Barranco Wall. Despite its name, it is not a technical rock climb. You will use your hands in a few places for balance, but your guide will lead you carefully and there is no need for climbing equipment.

The Barranco Wall is steep and can feel intimidating from below, but most climbers find it manageable when taken slowly. The higher sections offer excellent views across the valley, with Kibo Peak rising above.

After the wall, the trail continues across undulating ridges and valleys. You will descend briefly and then climb again towards Karanga Camp. The day is shorter than some other days, but the repeated ups and downs make it important for acclimatisation and energy management.

Arrive at Karanga Camp at approximately 4,035 metres. The afternoon is used for rest, hydration and preparation for the summit approach. Your guides will continue to monitor your wellbeing.

Enjoy an early dinner and overnight at Karanga Camp.

Elevation: 3,960m to 4,035m
Distance: Approximately 5 km
Walking time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Karanga Camp

Day 5 of 6-Day Kilimanjaro Climb: Classic Machame Route : Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

After breakfast, continue the gradual climb towards Barafu Camp. The trail crosses dry, rocky terrain with little vegetation. The mountain becomes more severe and exposed, and the air is noticeably thinner.

Barafu Camp is located at approximately 4,640 metres. It is the final camp before the summit attempt. The name Barafu means “ice” in Swahili, which reflects the cold conditions often experienced here.

You will arrive by lunchtime or early afternoon. Spend the day resting, drinking water, eating what you can and preparing your gear for the night. Your guide will check that you have warm summit clothing, headlamp, spare batteries, gloves, water and snacks ready.

Dinner is served early because the summit attempt begins around midnight. Try to sleep, even if only for a few hours.

Elevation: 4,035m to 4,640m
Distance: Approximately 4 km
Walking time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Barafu Camp

Day 6 of 6-Day Kilimanjaro Climb: Classic Machame Route : Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Summit day is the longest and toughest part of the climb.

Around midnight, you will wake up, have a light snack and begin the ascent towards the summit. You will climb slowly in darkness on a steep trail of volcanic scree. The temperature is often below freezing, and wind can make it feel much colder. Layered clothing, warm gloves and a reliable headlamp are essential.

Your guide will keep a very slow pace. The objective is not speed; it is to maintain a steady rhythm and conserve energy. You will pass Stella Point at approximately 5,756 metres, located on the crater rim. From there, continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak.

Uhuru Peak, at 5,895 metres, is the highest point in Africa. You will have time for photographs at the summit sign and to take in the glaciers and volcanic landscape around you. Because of the extreme altitude and cold, you will not remain there for long.

After the summit, descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest and lunch, then continue down to Mweka Camp. The descent can be tiring on the knees, but the thicker air at lower altitude often makes you feel stronger.

Dinner and overnight at Mweka Camp.

Elevation: 4,640m to 5,895m to 3,080m
Distance: Approximately 17 km
Walking time: 11–15 hours
Habitat: Arctic summit zone to rainforest edge
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Mweka Camp

Day 7 of 6-Day Kilimanjaro Climb: Classic Machame Route : Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

After breakfast, begin the final descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate. The path can be wet and muddy, particularly after rain. Trekking poles are helpful for this section.

At Mweka Gate, you will sign out with Kilimanjaro National Park authorities. Climbers who reach Uhuru Peak receive a summit certificate. Your driver will then transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.

Please note: although the climb is marketed as a 6-day Kilimanjaro Machame Route, the itinerary requires six nights on the mountain and exit on Day 7. This is the standard six-day route structure: five nights before summit day, one night at Mweka Camp after summit day, then descent and departure on the seventh morning.

Elevation: 3,080m to 1,640m
Distance: Approximately 10 km
Walking time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Preparing for Your Machame Route Climb

Train before your trip with regular walks, hiking, stair climbing, cycling or running. The most useful preparation is long, steady walking with a small backpack. Good fitness makes the trek more enjoyable, but it does not remove the risk of altitude sickness.

Bring well-worn hiking boots, waterproof layers, thermal base layers, a warm down jacket, gloves, hat, headlamp and trekking poles. Do not use brand-new boots for the first time on Kilimanjaro.

Your guide’s safety decision is final. If a climber develops serious altitude symptoms, descending is the correct and responsible action.
