Why Choose Zanzibar for Your Honeymoon?

Zanzibar is a strong honeymoon destination because it offers more than a beach. Couples can relax by the ocean, enjoy water activities, explore historic Stone Town and experience Zanzibar’s spice and Swahili culture.

The northern coast, including Nungwi and Kendwa, is popular for couples who want clear water, swimming, beautiful sunsets and a choice of beach restaurants. The east coast, including Paje and Jambiani, is ideal for couples who prefer long open beaches, a quieter pace and water sports. Matemwe and the north-east coast can be a good choice for privacy, snorkeling and boutique accommodation.

Your honeymoon should not feel rushed. This itinerary includes planned activities but also protects free time for swimming, slow breakfasts, sunset walks, spa treatments and private dinners.

Detailed 6-Day Zanzibar Honeymoon Holiday Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Zanzibar – Private Transfer to Your Beach Resort

Arrive at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar. An EKO Tanzania Adventures representative will meet you and provide a private transfer to your selected honeymoon beach hotel.

The transfer time depends on the beach location. Northern beaches such as Nungwi and Kendwa are usually around 1.5 to 2 hours from the airport. East-coast hotels in Paje, Jambiani or Matemwe may take around 1 to 1.5 hours.

On arrival, check into your hotel and settle into your room, suite or villa. If arranged in advance, the hotel may prepare honeymoon touches such as flowers, a special room decoration or a welcome drink.

The rest of the day is free. Walk along the beach, swim in the ocean, enjoy the pool or simply relax together after the journey.

In the evening, enjoy dinner at your hotel or a selected beachside restaurant.

Meals included: Dinner, depending on your selected accommodation plan
Overnight: Beach hotel, boutique resort or luxury villa in Zanzibar

Day 2: Free Beach Day and Romantic Sunset Experience

Wake up to a relaxed breakfast by the ocean. Today is left open for you to enjoy the beach at your own pace.

Spend the morning swimming, sunbathing, walking along the sand or relaxing beside the pool. This is your honeymoon, so there is no need to wake up early for every activity. You may choose to have breakfast slowly, enjoy a couple’s spa treatment or simply spend the day by the water.

Optional activities can be arranged if you would like something more active:

  • Snorkeling trip
  • Scuba diving
  • Paddleboarding or kayaking
  • Kitesurfing lesson in Paje
  • Couple’s massage or spa treatment
  • Private beach picnic
  • Horse riding on the beach, where available

In the late afternoon, enjoy a sunset dhow cruise or a special romantic dinner, depending on your selected package. A traditional wooden dhow cruise offers beautiful views of the Zanzibar coast as the sun sets over the Indian Ocean.

A private beach dinner can also be arranged at selected hotels. This may include a decorated table on the sand, candles, flowers and a personalised menu, depending on the property.

Return to your hotel for overnight.

Meals included: Breakfast and dinner, depending on your selected accommodation plan
Overnight: Beach hotel, boutique resort or luxury villa in Zanzibar

Day 3: Stone Town and Spice Farm Tour

After breakfast, leave the beach for a private Zanzibar cultural day.

Start with a guided Spice Farm Tour. Zanzibar is known as the Spice Island because it has a long history of growing cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, black pepper and tropical fruit.

During the tour, walk through a farm with a local guide and see how spices grow. You can smell and taste spices directly from the plants, learn about their traditional uses and enjoy the green countryside away from the coast.

After the spice experience, continue to Stone Town. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant or selected hotel before beginning a guided walking tour.

Stone Town is the historic heart of Zanzibar City and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its narrow streets, old coral-stone buildings, carved wooden doors and waterfront tell the story of Zanzibar’s role in Indian Ocean trade.

Your guide may show you or explain landmarks such as:

  • Old Fort
  • House of Wonders area
  • Darajani Market
  • Forodhani waterfront
  • Anglican Cathedral area
  • Former slave market memorial site
  • Historic Zanzibar doors and trading streets

You will have time to browse local craft shops, spice stores, artwork and textiles. There is no pressure to buy, but Stone Town is a good place to find meaningful souvenirs.

Later in the afternoon, return to your beach hotel for dinner and overnight.

Meals included: Breakfast and dinner, depending on your selected accommodation plan
Overnight: Beach hotel, boutique resort or luxury villa in Zanzibar

Day 4: Safari Blue or Snorkeling Ocean Adventure

After breakfast, depart for a full-day ocean excursion.

For couples staying in the south-east or central parts of Zanzibar, Safari Blue is a popular choice. It usually includes a traditional dhow cruise, swimming, snorkeling, sandbank time and a seafood lunch. The exact route depends on sea conditions, tides and the operator’s daily programme.

For couples staying near Matemwe or the north-east coast, a Mnemba Atoll snorkeling trip may be more suitable. Mnemba is known for clear water, coral reefs and colourful marine life.

During the ocean excursion, you may have opportunities to swim, snorkel, relax on a sandbank and enjoy the scenery of Zanzibar’s coastline. Dolphin sightings are possible in some areas, but they are wild animals and cannot be guaranteed.

Lunch is usually served during the excursion, often including seafood, grilled food, fruit and refreshments. Vegetarian meals can be arranged with advance notice.

Return to your hotel in the afternoon. The evening is free for a relaxed dinner and overnight.

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner, depending on your selected accommodation plan
Overnight: Beach hotel, boutique resort or luxury villa in Zanzibar

Day 5: Leisure Day at Your Beach Resort

Today is free for you to enjoy the resort and the beach without a fixed programme.

This is a valuable part of a honeymoon itinerary. After travel, guided tours and ocean activities, a full free day gives you time to slow down and enjoy the reason you came to Zanzibar.

You may choose to:

  • Sleep in and enjoy breakfast slowly
  • Swim in the ocean or hotel pool
  • Relax on the beach
  • Book a couple’s spa treatment
  • Take a beach walk at sunset
  • Enjoy lunch at a local beach restaurant
  • Try water sports
  • Arrange a private photography session
  • Add a Jozani Forest Tour or Prison Island boat trip

Jozani Forest is home to Zanzibar red colobus monkeys, found only on the island. Prison Island is reached by boat from Stone Town and is known for giant tortoises and clear-water snorkeling.

In the evening, enjoy a final romantic dinner at your hotel or a private beach dinner if not arranged earlier in the itinerary.

Meals included: Breakfast and dinner, depending on your selected accommodation plan
Overnight: Beach hotel, boutique resort or luxury villa in Zanzibar

Day 6: Beach Morning and Departure

After breakfast, enjoy your final morning in Zanzibar.

Depending on your flight time, you may have time for one last swim, beach walk or relaxed coffee overlooking the ocean. Check out from your hotel and meet your EKO Tanzania Adventures driver for a private transfer to Zanzibar Airport.

If you are continuing to mainland Tanzania, Kenya or another destination, we will arrange the transfer according to your flight schedule.

Meals included: Breakfast

Best Beaches for a Zanzibar Honeymoon

Nungwi and Kendwa

These northern beaches are popular for swimming, sunsets and beachside restaurants. The tide has less visible impact here than on the east coast, making them a good choice for couples who want easy beach swimming.

Paje and Jambiani

These east-coast areas offer long beaches, a relaxed village atmosphere and water sports. Tides are more noticeable, creating dramatic sandy flats at low tide. Paje is especially popular for kitesurfing.

Matemwe

Matemwe is often quieter and suits couples who prefer privacy, boutique hotels and access to snorkeling excursions around Mnemba Atoll.

EKO Tanzania Adventures will recommend the best location based on your preferred atmosphere, hotel category, swimming expectations and travel dates.

Best Time to Visit Zanzibar

Zanzibar is warm throughout the year.

The drier periods from June to October and January to February are popular for honeymoon beach holidays. These months often bring sunny days, good swimming conditions and clear ocean views.

The wetter periods are usually around March to May and November. Rain can occur, but Zanzibar is still enjoyable, particularly for couples who prefer quieter hotels and greener scenery.

Honeymoon Accommodation Options

Boutique beach hotel: Intimate setting, comfortable room or suite, beach access and a more personal atmosphere.

Luxury beach resort: Larger facilities, swimming pool, spa, restaurant, ocean-view rooms and a range of activities.

Private villa: A more secluded option for couples who want privacy, dedicated space and a quiet beach setting.

We will provide suitable available options before booking.

Machame and Lemosho are popular scenic routes with good acclimatisation time. Marangu uses huts, while Rongai is quieter and approaches from the north. The best route depends on your time, experience and preferred comfort level.
