9-Day Kilimanjaro Climb: Scenic Shira Route

Explore Tours

The 9-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Climb via the Shira Route is a longer, carefully paced itinerary designed for travellers who want extra time to acclimatise before attempting Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.

Shira Route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the west and begins at a much higher altitude than Lemosho Route. Climbers are driven by 4×4 vehicle through the forest to the Shira Plateau, where trekking begins at approximately 3,400 to 3,500 metres. Because of this high starting point, a properly paced Shira itinerary needs additional time for acclimatisation.

This package includes a pre-climb arrival and preparation day in Moshi or Arusha, followed by an eight-day mountain itinerary. On the mountain, you cross the Shira Plateau, spend time acclimatising near Shira 2 Camp, climb high at Lava Tower, descend to Barranco Camp, continue through Karanga and Barafu camps, then summit Uhuru Peak before descending through Mweka rainforest.

EKO Tanzania Adventures provides experienced mountain guides, assistant guides, porters and cooks for your Shira Route climb. We arrange park fees, mountain tents, meals, safety support, transfers and daily health monitoring. The focus is on proper preparation, a steady pace and responsible guiding from the day you arrive until the end of the trek.

About the Shira Route

Shira Route and Lemosho Route both approach Kilimanjaro from the western side, but they begin differently. Lemosho starts lower in rainforest and gradually climbs to the Shira Plateau. Shira Route uses a 4×4 transfer to reach the plateau at a much higher altitude before trekking begins.

The high starting point is the main thing climbers need to understand before choosing Shira. You begin around 3,400 to 3,500 metres, so your body has less time to adjust during the early days. For this reason, the extra acclimatisation time included in this nine-day package is important.

The route offers wide views across the Shira Plateau, volcanic scenery, high-altitude desert, the Barranco Wall and the final summit approach from Barafu Camp. It is a camping route, with tents set up by the mountain crew at each campsite.

You do not need technical climbing experience, ropes or ice axes. However, you should be physically fit and prepared for long walks, uneven terrain, low temperatures and high altitude.

Detailed 9-Day Shira Route Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania – Moshi or Arusha

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where an EKO Tanzania Adventures representative will meet you and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.

This day is important for rest after international travel. In the evening, meet your Kilimanjaro guide for a full briefing. Your guide will check your clothing and equipment, answer questions and explain the Shira Route itinerary.

You will also have time to hire or arrange any missing items such as trekking poles, sleeping bag, warm jacket or other mountain equipment.

Rest well, drink water and prepare for the drive to Kilimanjaro National Park the following morning.

Meals included: Dinner, depending on arrival arrangement
Overnight: Hotel in Moshi or Arusha

Day 2: Morum Barrier to Shira 1 Camp

After breakfast, drive from Moshi or Arusha to Londorossi Gate for park registration. Continue by 4×4 vehicle through forest tracks towards Morum Barrier on the Shira Plateau.

Because the road rises to a high altitude, the trekking begins at around 3,400 to 3,500 metres. This is much higher than the start of other Kilimanjaro routes, so your guide will make sure the first walk is slow and controlled.

Begin trekking across the open Shira Plateau towards Shira 1 Camp. The landscape is very different from the rainforest lower down. You will see wide volcanic plains, low vegetation and distant views of Kibo Peak when the weather is clear.

Arrive at Shira 1 Camp at approximately 3,505 metres. Your tents will be ready, and the crew will prepare a hot meal.

Elevation: Approximately 3,400m to 3,505m
Distance: Approximately 4 km
Walking time: 2–3 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Shira 1 Camp

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

After breakfast, continue across the Shira Plateau towards Shira 2 Camp. This is a gradual trek through open moorland with wide views across the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro.

The route passes volcanic formations and low vegetation. The walking pace remains slow because you are already at significant altitude. Your guide will remind you to drink water, eat regularly and avoid rushing.

Arrive at Shira 2 Camp at approximately 3,840 metres. This camp gives you good views of Kibo Peak and the route ahead towards Lava Tower.

After lunch, rest and allow your body to settle into the altitude. Dinner and overnight at Shira 2 Camp.

Elevation: 3,505m to 3,840m
Distance: Approximately 7 km
Walking time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Shira 2 Camp

Day 4: Acclimatisation Day at Shira 2 Camp

Today is dedicated to acclimatisation. After breakfast, take a guided hike towards a higher point on the Shira Plateau, often in the direction of Cathedral Point or nearby ridges, depending on weather and your guide’s assessment.

The purpose is to spend time higher than camp before returning to sleep at Shira 2 Camp. This follows the important mountaineering principle of climb high and sleep low.

The walk gives you more time to enjoy the landscape, photograph Kibo Peak and observe how your body responds to altitude. Your guides will check your oxygen saturation, pulse and general condition.

Return to Shira 2 Camp for lunch and rest. The afternoon is for hydration, recovery and preparation for the climb towards Lava Tower the next day.

Elevation: 3,840m to approximately 4,200m and back
Walking time: Approximately 3–4 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Shira 2 Camp

Day 5: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

After breakfast, leave Shira 2 Camp and trek east towards Lava Tower. The trail climbs gradually through increasingly dry alpine desert. Vegetation becomes sparse, and volcanic rocks dominate the landscape.

Lava Tower stands at approximately 4,630 metres. You will stop for lunch near this important landmark. Spending time at this elevation is a key acclimatisation stage, and your guide will monitor how everyone feels.

After lunch, descend towards Barranco Camp at approximately 3,960 metres. Even though you sleep lower than Lava Tower, the time spent high during the day supports your body’s adaptation to altitude.

Barranco Camp is one of Kilimanjaro’s most striking campsites. It sits below the Barranco Wall and has views of deep valleys, volcanic cliffs and giant groundsels.

Elevation: 3,840m to 4,630m to 3,960m
Distance: Approximately 10 km
Walking time: 6–8 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Barranco Camp

Day 6: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

After breakfast, climb the Barranco Wall. From below, it can look difficult, but it is a trekking scramble rather than a technical climb. You may use your hands for balance in a few places, and your guides will lead you carefully.

The top of the wall offers impressive views over Barranco Valley and towards Kibo Peak. Continue along ridges and valleys, descending briefly before climbing again towards Karanga Camp.

This is a shorter trekking day, but it remains important for acclimatisation. The up-and-down terrain allows your body to spend time at higher elevations before sleeping at camp.

Arrive at Karanga Camp at approximately 4,035 metres. Rest, hydrate and enjoy dinner.

Elevation: 3,960m to 4,035m
Distance: Approximately 5 km
Walking time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Karanga Camp

Day 7: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

After breakfast, continue towards Barafu Camp. The route passes through dry, rocky and exposed alpine desert. As you gain height, the landscape becomes harsher and the air thinner.

Walk slowly and conserve energy. Barafu Camp is located at approximately 4,640 metres and is the final camp before the summit attempt.

Arrive by lunchtime or early afternoon. Spend the afternoon resting, eating and preparing your summit clothing and equipment. Your guide will check that you have warm layers, insulated jacket, gloves, hat, headlamp, spare batteries, water and snacks.

Dinner is served early because the summit climb begins around midnight.

Elevation: 4,035m to 4,640m
Distance: Approximately 4 km
Walking time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Barafu Camp

Day 8: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Summit day is the longest and most challenging day of your Shira Route climb.

Around midnight, wake up for a light snack and begin the ascent towards Uhuru Peak. The trail climbs steeply over loose volcanic scree in darkness. Temperatures can be below freezing, and the wind can make conditions even colder.

Your guide will maintain a slow pace. The aim is to manage energy and altitude safely, not to reach the summit quickly. Take small steps, breathe steadily and tell your guide immediately if you feel seriously unwell.

After several hours, reach Stella Point at approximately 5,756 metres on the crater rim. From there, continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.

Take photographs at the summit sign and enjoy the achievement of reaching Africa’s highest point. Because of the extreme altitude and cold, time at the summit is brief.

Descend to Barafu Camp for a short rest and lunch, then continue down to Mweka Camp at approximately 3,080 metres. Dinner and overnight at Mweka Camp.

Elevation: 4,640m to 5,895m to 3,080m
Distance: Approximately 17 km
Walking time: 11–15 hours
Habitat: Arctic summit zone to rainforest edge
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Mweka Camp

Day 9: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate and Return to Moshi

After breakfast, begin your final descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. The path can be muddy after rain, and trekking poles are useful for the downhill sections.

At Mweka Gate, sign out with Kilimanjaro National Park. Climbers who reach Uhuru Peak receive an official summit certificate.

Meet your driver and return to Moshi or Arusha. You can relax, enjoy a hot shower and celebrate the completion of your Kilimanjaro climb.

Elevation: 3,080m to 1,640m
Distance: Approximately 10 km
Walking time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

  • January to early March: Cooler conditions and often fewer climbers
  • June to October: Generally dry weather and clearer mountain views
  • December to early January: Popular holiday period

Preparing for the Shira Route

Shira Route requires good fitness and careful preparation because trekking begins at high altitude. Train with hiking, uphill walking, stair climbing and regular cardiovascular exercise before arrival.

Bring boots that are already broken in, waterproof layers, thermal base layers, a warm insulated jacket, gloves, hat, trekking poles and a reliable headlamp.

Fitness does not prevent altitude sickness. Your guides will monitor your condition, and their safety decision is final. The summit is important, but returning safely is always the priority.
