Detailed 8 Days Tanzania Family Safari Adventure Itinerary

Day 1 of 8 Days Tanzania Family Safari Adventure : Arrival in Arusha

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport, where an EKO Tanzania Adventures representative will meet your family and transfer you to your hotel in Arusha.

This day is for settling in after your flight. Depending on your arrival time, you can relax at the hotel, enjoy the garden or swimming pool, or take a short walk nearby.

In the evening, your safari guide or travel coordinator will give you a briefing about the journey ahead. You can ask questions about the route, weather, packing, wildlife, accommodation and any family needs.

An early night is recommended before your first safari day.

Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

After breakfast, leave Arusha and drive towards Tarangire National Park. The journey normally takes around two to three hours, passing through local towns, farms and Maasai country.

Tarangire is a strong first park for families because of its elephants. Large elephant herds are often seen moving through the woodland, near the Tarangire River or beneath ancient baobab trees. Children enjoy watching calves follow their mothers and seeing how different elephant groups behave.

After entering the park, begin your game drive. In addition to elephants, you may see giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, warthogs, baboons, impalas and gazelles. Lions, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas also live in Tarangire, although wildlife sightings always depend on natural movement.

Stop at a designated picnic site for lunch. Your guide will make sure there is time for a break, toilet facilities where available and a chance for children to stretch their legs safely.

Continue the afternoon game drive through different areas of the park. The baobab trees, grasslands and river landscapes make Tarangire very scenic for family photographs.

Later, leave the park and drive to your family lodge or camp near Karatu or Mto wa Mbu.

Day 3: Lake Manyara National Park Game Drive

After breakfast, depart for Lake Manyara National Park. This is a smaller park with a different atmosphere from Tarangire. It sits at the foot of the Great Rift Valley escarpment and has forest, grassland, lake-edge habitat and open views.

The forest section is often exciting for children because of the monkeys and baboons. You may see large groups of olive baboons moving through the trees, blue monkeys in the canopy and birds around the forest edge.

As the game drive continues, look for giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, wildebeest, hippos and antelopes. Lake Manyara is known for tree-climbing lions, but these are not seen every day and cannot be guaranteed.

The lake attracts many water birds. Depending on the season and water level, you may see flamingos, pelicans, storks, herons and other species along the shore.

Enjoy a picnic lunch, then continue with the game drive during the afternoon. Later, return to your lodge for dinner and rest.

Day 4: Karatu to Serengeti National Park

After an early breakfast, begin the journey towards Serengeti National Park. The drive passes through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where the scenery changes from highland farms to open grassland and Maasai country.

If weather and time allow, stop at the Ngorongoro Crater rim viewpoint. From here, the family can look down into the huge crater before continuing west towards Serengeti.

As you enter Serengeti, the landscape opens into wide grasslands, acacia trees and rocky kopjes. The name Serengeti comes from the Maasai word Siringet, often translated as “endless plains.”

Your game drive begins as you travel towards Central Serengeti. Look for giraffes, zebras, elephants, lions and other wildlife along the way. The journey is longer than the first days, but it is broken up by wildlife viewing, lunch and rest stops.

Arrive at your safari camp or lodge in the evening. Tented camps are safe and provide a memorable family safari experience, while lodges may offer larger rooms and additional facilities. Your guide will explain camp safety rules, including walking with staff after dark.

Day 5: Full-Day Serengeti Family Game Drive

After breakfast, set out for a full-day Serengeti game drive with a packed lunch.

Central Serengeti is one of the best wildlife areas in Tanzania. It has rivers, kopjes, grasslands and woodland, which attract animals throughout the year. Your guide will choose the route according to the latest wildlife information and your family’s interests.

Children often enjoy keeping a wildlife checklist. They can look for elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, hippos, buffaloes, warthogs, hyenas, baboons, ostriches and different bird species. Your guide can help explain animal tracks, feeding habits, predator behaviour and the difference between herbivores and carnivores.

Lions are commonly seen in Serengeti, often resting in grasslands or on rocky kopjes. Leopards can sometimes be seen in trees near rivers, while cheetahs may be found in open areas. No wildlife sighting can be guaranteed, but the guide will use their knowledge to find the strongest activity available.

Day 6: Another Day in Serengeti National Park

A second full day in Serengeti gives your family more time to enjoy the park without pressure. Rather than trying to see everything quickly, you can revisit good wildlife areas, look for animals missed the previous day and watch behaviour for longer.

Early morning is often a good time for wildlife viewing. Lions may still be active after the night, while zebras and wildebeest graze in the cooler hours. Your guide may choose to start early or begin later depending on your family’s preferred routine.

Depending on the season, you may see part of the Great Migration. The migration moves across the larger Serengeti ecosystem according to rainfall and fresh grass. If the main herds are near Central Serengeti during your travel dates, your guide will make the best effort to take you towards them.

The day is not only about large animals. Serengeti also offers smaller moments: colourful birds, mongoose families, jackals, dung beetles, lizards and animal tracks in the dust.

Enjoy another picnic lunch, continue the afternoon game drive and return to camp for your final Serengeti evening.

Day 7: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater

After breakfast, leave Serengeti and enjoy a morning game drive as you travel back towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

The journey gives you final opportunities to look for wildlife on the Serengeti plains. You may see elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras or other animals as you leave the park.

Later, arrive at the Ngorongoro Crater rim and descend approximately 600 metres to the crater floor. Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and one of the best places for a family wildlife game drive.

The crater has grassland, woodland, lakes, swamps and freshwater springs. This means many animals can be seen in a relatively compact area. You may see lions, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas, jackals, warthogs and gazelles.

Ngorongoro is also one of Tanzania’s best places to look for black rhinos. Rhinos are rare and may be far from the vehicle, but the crater offers a real opportunity to search for them.

Enjoy a picnic lunch near the hippo pool before continuing your game drive. Later in the afternoon, ascend the crater rim and drive to your lodge or camp in Karatu.

Day 8: Karatu to Arusha and Departure

After breakfast, begin the drive back to Arusha. The journey passes through local countryside, farms and towns.

Best Time for a 8 Days Tanzania Family Safari Adventure

Tanzania can be visited throughout the year, but the right time depends on your family’s priorities.

June to October is the main dry season. Wildlife is often easier to see because vegetation is thinner, and Tarangire is especially rewarding for elephants around the river. Days are usually dry, though mornings and evenings can be cool.

November to May brings greener scenery, excellent birdlife and fewer visitors in some periods. Rain can occur, especially during March, April and May, but the parks remain open and wildlife viewing continues.

For families hoping to see the wildebeest calving season, Southern Serengeti and Ndutu are often most suitable from around December to March, depending on the rains.
