5-Day Zanzibar Stone Town & Beach Holiday: A Relaxed Island Story
Explore Tours
This 5-Day Zanzibar Stone Town and Beach Holiday combines the island’s history, culture and coastline in one well-balanced trip. You will begin in Stone Town, Zanzibar’s historic centre, before moving to a selected beach hotel for ocean views, swimming and time to relax.
Stone Town is known for narrow streets, carved wooden doors, old merchant houses, spice markets and a mix of Swahili, African, Arab, Indian and European influences. It is the cultural heart of Zanzibar and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Paje and Jambiani are ideal for long east-coast beaches, water sports and a more relaxed village atmosphere. Matemwe is a quieter option for guests interested in snorkeling and peaceful beach time.

About Stone Town and Zanzibar Beaches
A Zanzibar holiday is more rewarding when you experience both sides of the island. Stone Town offers history, architecture, markets and local culture. The beach offers the space to slow down, swim and enjoy the Indian Ocean.
Stone Town has been an important trading centre for centuries. Its narrow streets reflect the influence of East Africa, Arabia, India and Europe. The town is known for its carved doors, coral-stone buildings, mosques, small shops and waterfront.
The beach areas are very different from Stone Town. Northern beaches such as Nungwi and Kendwa have soft sand, clear water and less dramatic tidal change, making them popular for swimming. East-coast beaches such as Paje and Jambiani are long, open and beautiful, with stronger tides and excellent conditions for kitesurfing.
This itinerary gives you time to understand Zanzibar’s history before ending the trip with a proper beach stay.
Detailed 5-Day Zanzibar Stone Town and Beach Holiday Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Zanzibar – Transfer to Stone Town
Arrive at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar. An EKO Tanzania Adventures representative will meet you and provide a private transfer to your Stone Town hotel.
The drive from the airport to Stone Town is short, normally around 15 to 25 minutes depending on traffic. On arrival, check into your hotel and take time to settle in after your journey.
The rest of the day is free. You may relax at the hotel, walk along the waterfront or explore nearby streets at your own pace.
Stone Town is especially enjoyable in the late afternoon when the heat reduces and local life becomes more active. You may wish to walk towards Forodhani Gardens, where food stalls often appear in the evening. The waterfront is a good place to watch local dhows, fishermen and the sunset.
Dinner can be enjoyed at your hotel or a selected local restaurant.
Meals included: Dinner, depending on your selected accommodation plan
Overnight: Hotel in Stone Town
Day 2: Guided Stone Town Tour and Optional Prison Island Visit
After breakfast, meet your local guide for a walking tour of Stone Town.
The guide will lead you through narrow streets and explain Zanzibar’s trading history, Swahili culture and the different communities that have shaped the island. You will see old coral-stone buildings, carved wooden doors, small shops, mosques and markets.
Depending on the planned route, your tour may include or pass the following sites:
- Old Fort
- House of Wonders area
- Forodhani waterfront
- Darajani Market
- Anglican Cathedral area
- Former slave market memorial site
- Historic streets and carved Zanzibar doors
The Stone Town visit is not only about historic buildings. It gives you a chance to understand Zanzibar’s past as a major Indian Ocean trading centre and the complex cultural influences still visible today.
After the walking tour, enjoy lunch in Stone Town or at a local restaurant.
In the afternoon, you may return to the hotel for relaxation or add an optional boat trip to Prison Island. Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, is a short boat journey from Stone Town. It is known for its giant tortoises, historic buildings and clear-water snorkeling areas.
Return to Stone Town in the late afternoon for dinner and overnight.
Meals included: Breakfast and dinner, depending on your selected accommodation plan
Overnight: Hotel in Stone Town
Day 3: Spice Farm Tour and Transfer to Zanzibar Beach Hotel
After breakfast and check-out, leave Stone Town for a Zanzibar Spice Farm Tour.
Zanzibar is often called the Spice Island because of its long history of growing cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, black pepper and tropical fruit. During the tour, you will walk through a farm with a local guide and learn how spices are grown and used.
You can see, smell and taste spices directly from the plants. The experience is practical and enjoyable, giving you an understanding of why Zanzibar became so important in the spice trade.
After the spice tour, enjoy lunch before continuing to your selected beach hotel.
The transfer time depends on the beach area:
- Stone Town to Nungwi or Kendwa: approximately 1.5 to 2 hours
- Stone Town to Paje or Jambiani: approximately 1 to 1.5 hours
- Stone Town to Matemwe: approximately 1.5 hours
Arrive at your beach hotel, check in and enjoy your first afternoon on the coast. Walk on the beach, swim in the ocean or relax beside the pool.
Dinner and overnight at your beach hotel.
Meals included: Breakfast and dinner, depending on your selected accommodation plan
Overnight: Beach hotel or resort in Zanzibar
Day 4: Free Beach Day and Optional Ocean Activities
Today is free for you to enjoy Zanzibar’s beach life at your own pace.
Begin with breakfast overlooking the ocean, then choose how you would like to spend the day. You may swim, relax on the beach, read under a palm tree, enjoy a spa treatment or explore the nearby village.
Optional activities can be arranged according to your beach location, weather and interests:
Snorkeling: Trips can be arranged to nearby reefs or Mnemba Atoll, depending on the departure point. You may see colourful fish, coral and marine life.
Diving: Zanzibar offers diving sites for both beginners and certified divers.
Sunset dhow cruise: A traditional wooden dhow cruise is a relaxed evening option, especially popular for couples and honeymooners.
Kitesurfing: Paje is one of Zanzibar’s best areas for kitesurfing lessons and rentals.
Jozani Forest: Visit the forest to look for Zanzibar red colobus monkeys, a species found only on the island.
Village walk: Guests staying in Jambiani or Paje can take a guided village walk to learn about seaweed farming, fishing and coastal life.
The day can remain completely free if you prefer to rest. This is a beach holiday, so there is no need to fill every hour with activities.
Enjoy a final dinner at your beach hotel or a nearby restaurant.
Meals included: Breakfast and dinner, depending on your selected accommodation plan
Overnight: Beach hotel or resort in Zanzibar
Day 5: Beach Morning and Departure
After breakfast, enjoy your final morning in Zanzibar.
Depending on your flight time, you may have time for a final swim, beach walk, coffee or short relaxation by the pool. Check out from the hotel and meet your private EKO Tanzania Adventures driver for the airport transfer.
You will be dropped at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport according to your flight schedule.
For guests continuing to mainland Tanzania, Kenya or another destination, we can arrange the transfer around your onward flight. For guests arriving from a Tanzania safari, this five-day package is also an easy and enjoyable way to finish the holiday.

Best Time to Visit Zanzibar
Zanzibar can be visited all year round.
The drier months, generally from June to October and January to February, are popular for beach holidays. These periods often bring sunshine, warm temperatures and good conditions for swimming and ocean activities.
The wetter periods are usually around March to May and November. Rain can occur, but Zanzibar remains warm and can be a good choice for travellers looking for quieter hotels and greener island scenery.
Beach conditions vary by coast. Nungwi and Kendwa are often preferred for swimming because tides have less visible effect. Paje and Jambiani experience larger tidal changes, but offer dramatic beaches and excellent water-sport conditions.
