7-Day Nungwi Zanzibar Beach Holiday : Seven Days of Island Ease

Explore Tours

This 7-Day Nungwi Zanzibar Beach Holiday gives you time to enjoy Zanzibar slowly. It is designed for travellers who want more than a quick beach stop: time to swim, enjoy the sunsets, explore Stone Town, take an ocean trip and still have free days with no fixed schedule.

Nungwi is located on the northern tip of Zanzibar. It is one of the island’s most popular beach areas because of its soft white sand, clear Indian Ocean water, sunset views and good swimming conditions. Compared with some east-coast beaches, the tide is less noticeable in Nungwi, so guests can often enjoy the water throughout more of the day.

This holiday includes private airport transfers, selected Nungwi accommodation, a Stone Town and Spice Farm visit, and an ocean activity such as snorkeling or a boat excursion. The remaining days are left flexible so you can relax, book optional activities or simply enjoy your beach hotel.

EKO Tanzania Adventures can arrange this package as a budget, mid-range or luxury Zanzibar holiday. It is suitable for couples, families, friends, honeymooners and guests finishing a Tanzania safari or Mount Kilimanjaro climb.

About Nungwi Beach

Nungwi lies at the northern end of Zanzibar, facing the Indian Ocean. It is known for its wide beach, pale sand, calm-looking water and beautiful sunsets.

The northern coast is popular with guests who want a beach where swimming is often possible without the very large tidal changes found on some parts of Zanzibar’s east coast. Tide levels still change naturally, but the beach is generally more convenient for guests who want to spend a lot of time in the water.

Nungwi has a lively but relaxed atmosphere. There are small beach restaurants, hotels, dive centres, local shops and traditional dhow boats along parts of the coast. Guests can choose a quiet boutique lodge away from the busier areas or a larger resort with pools, restaurants and activities.

Nungwi is also close to Kendwa Beach, another beautiful northern beach known for swimming and sunset views. A walk, short transfer or organised excursion can be arranged between the two areas.

Detailed 7-Day Nungwi Zanzibar Beach Holiday Itinerary

Day 1 of 7-Day Nungwi Zanzibar Beach Holiday: Arrival in Zanzibar – Transfer to Nungwi

Arrive at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar. An EKO Tanzania Adventures representative will meet you and provide a private transfer to your selected Nungwi beach hotel.

The drive from Zanzibar Airport to Nungwi usually takes around 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. Along the way, you will pass through local villages, tropical countryside, coconut palms and small roadside shops.

On arrival at your hotel, check in and settle into your room. The rest of the day is free for you to relax after your journey.

Walk down to the beach, swim in the ocean, enjoy the pool or sit with a cold drink as the sun begins to set over the water. Nungwi is particularly beautiful in the evening, when the sky changes colour and traditional dhows may be visible offshore.

Dinner and overnight at your beach hotel.

Meals included: Dinner, depending on your selected accommodation plan
Overnight: Beach hotel or resort in Nungwi

Day 2 of 7-Day Nungwi Zanzibar Beach Holiday: Free Nungwi Beach Day

After breakfast, enjoy your first full day in Nungwi at your own pace.

This day is intentionally free. Zanzibar beach holidays are best when guests have time to slow down instead of following a busy schedule every morning.

You can swim, relax on the beach, walk along the shore, read beside the pool or enjoy breakfast and lunch at your hotel. Nungwi also has beach restaurants and small local shops where you can enjoy a relaxed afternoon.

Optional activities can be arranged if you would like to be more active:

  • Snorkeling trip
  • Scuba diving
  • Kayaking or paddleboarding
  • Jet ski, where available
  • Beach massage or spa treatment
  • Guided village walk
  • Trip to nearby Kendwa Beach
  • Sunset dhow cruise

A sunset dhow cruise is especially popular in Nungwi. Traditional wooden boats sail along the northern coast in the late afternoon, giving guests a peaceful view of the sunset from the water.

Return to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Meals included: Breakfast and dinner, depending on your selected accommodation plan
Overnight: Beach hotel or resort in Nungwi

Day 3 of 7-Day Nungwi Zanzibar Beach Holiday : Stone Town and Spice Farm Experience

After breakfast, leave Nungwi for a private Zanzibar culture day.

The first stop is a Spice Farm Tour. Zanzibar has a long history of producing cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, black pepper and tropical fruit. During the tour, you will walk through a farm with a local guide and learn how the spices are grown, harvested and used.

You can see, smell and taste spices directly from the plants. The guide may also explain their use in food, traditional remedies and Zanzibar’s historical trade.

After the spice tour, continue to Stone Town for lunch and a guided walking tour.

Stone Town is Zanzibar’s historic centre and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its narrow lanes, carved wooden doors, coral-stone buildings and waterfront reflect centuries of African, Arab, Indian and European influence.

Your guide may show you or explain key places such as:

  • Old Fort
  • House of Wonders area
  • Darajani Market
  • Forodhani Gardens
  • Anglican Cathedral area
  • Former slave market memorial site
  • Historic merchant houses and Zanzibar doors

You will have time to browse local shops for spices, artwork, clothing, handmade crafts and souvenirs.

In the late afternoon, return to Nungwi. The drive gives you time to relax after a full cultural day. Dinner and overnight at your beach hotel.

Meals included: Breakfast and dinner, depending on your selected accommodation plan
Overnight: Beach hotel or resort in Nungwi

Day 4 of 7-Day Nungwi Zanzibar Beach Holiday : Full-Day Ocean Adventure

After breakfast, join a full-day ocean activity.

The exact activity can be selected according to your preferences, weather and availability. For guests staying in Nungwi, popular options include a snorkeling excursion, dolphin-search trip, Mnemba Atoll excursion or a boat day along the north-east coast.

Mnemba Atoll is one of Zanzibar’s best-known snorkeling areas. Trips usually include a boat ride, snorkeling equipment, time in the water and refreshments. You may see colourful fish, coral and other marine life. Dolphins can sometimes be seen in the area, but they are wild animals and cannot be guaranteed.

For couples or small groups looking for a more relaxed option, a private dhow charter can be arranged. This may include swimming stops, snorkeling, snacks and a personalised pace.

Lunch is usually included on a full-day ocean excursion, depending on the selected activity. Vegetarian or other dietary requirements can be arranged with advance notice.

Return to Nungwi in the afternoon. Enjoy a relaxed evening at your hotel.

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner, depending on your selected accommodation plan
Overnight: Beach hotel or resort in Nungwi

Day 5 of 7-Day Nungwi Zanzibar Beach Holiday : Leisure Day in Nungwi

Today is another free day for beach time and relaxation.

By now, you will know the rhythm of the area. You may choose to spend the whole day at your hotel, enjoy the beach, book a spa treatment, try diving or walk along the coastline.

For guests who enjoy active holidays, Nungwi is a good place for diving. The northern coast has several dive centres offering trips for beginners and certified divers. A discover-scuba session or certified dive can be arranged separately.

You may also visit Kendwa Beach, which is close to Nungwi and known for its white sand and clear water. It is a good place for a beach lunch, swim or sunset drink.

For guests who want a quiet day, this is the perfect opportunity to do nothing except enjoy the ocean, pool and warm island weather.

Dinner and overnight at your beach hotel.

Meals included: Breakfast and dinner, depending on your selected accommodation plan
Overnight: Beach hotel or resort in Nungwi

Day 6 of 7-Day Nungwi Zanzibar Beach Holiday : Optional Jozani Forest, Prison Island or Beach Day

After breakfast, choose between a further beach day or an optional island excursion.

One option is a visit to Jozani Forest, home to Zanzibar red colobus monkeys. These monkeys are found only on Zanzibar and are one of the island’s most distinctive wildlife species. A forest walk can be combined with a visit to mangrove boardwalk areas, depending on the route and weather.

Another option is Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island. It is reached by boat from Stone Town and is known for giant tortoises, historic buildings and clear-water snorkeling areas. This option involves a longer transfer from Nungwi, so it should be arranged in advance.

You may also choose to remain in Nungwi and enjoy one last uninterrupted beach day. This is often the best choice for guests who want a true beach holiday rather than several excursions.

In the evening, enjoy a final Zanzibar dinner. A private beach dinner or special romantic setup can be arranged at selected hotels on request.

Meals included: Breakfast and dinner, depending on your selected accommodation plan
Overnight: Beach hotel or resort in Nungwi

Day 7 of 7-Day Nungwi Zanzibar Beach Holiday : Nungwi Beach Morning and Departure

After breakfast, enjoy your final morning in Nungwi.

Depending on your flight schedule, you may have time for one last swim, beach walk or relaxed breakfast overlooking the ocean. Check out from your hotel and meet your EKO Tanzania Adventures driver for the private transfer back to Zanzibar Airport.

The return transfer normally takes around 1.5 to 2 hours. We will arrange the departure time according to your flight schedule.

Meals included: Breakfast

Best Time to Visit Nungwi, Zanzibar

Nungwi can be enjoyed throughout the year.

The drier months, generally from June to October and January to February, are popular for beach holidays. These months often bring sunshine, good swimming conditions and clear ocean views.

The wetter periods are usually around March to May and November. Zanzibar remains warm, and this can be a good time for guests looking for quieter hotels and greener island scenery.

Nungwi is often preferred by travellers who want beach swimming because the northern coast is less affected by large tidal changes than many east-coast beaches.

Nungwi Accommodation Options

Budget beach hotel: Comfortable rooms close to the beach, suitable for travellers who want a lower-cost Zanzibar stay.

Mid-range beach resort: Private rooms, restaurant, pool or beach facilities and a relaxed holiday atmosphere.

Luxury resort or boutique hotel: Spacious rooms or villas, high-quality dining, spa facilities, ocean views and more personalised service.
