5-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Climb: Classic Marangu Route

Explore Tours

The 5-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Climb via the Marangu Route is the most direct way to climb Africa’s highest mountain. Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” Marangu is the only Kilimanjaro route that uses mountain huts rather than tents for overnight stays. This makes it a practical option for climbers who prefer sleeping indoors while experiencing the changing landscapes of Mount Kilimanjaro.

The route starts at Marangu Gate on the eastern side of the mountain. It passes through rainforest, moorland and alpine desert before reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. The summit attempt begins during the night, followed by sunrise near the top of Africa and a long descent back down the mountain.

This five-day version is designed for fit travellers with limited time and previous high-altitude trekking experience. It does not include an extra acclimatisation day, so the climb is faster and more demanding than the six-day Marangu Route. Good physical preparation, a steady pace and careful attention to your guide’s advice are essential.

EKO Tanzania Adventures provides trained mountain guides, porters, cooks, park fees, hut accommodation and transport arrangements for a properly organised Kilimanjaro climb. Our team focuses on safety, realistic preparation and personal support throughout the trek.

About the 5-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Climb

The Marangu Route is one of the oldest and most recognised Kilimanjaro climbing routes. It is often chosen because it has hut accommodation, a clear trail and a direct route to the summit. Climbers sleep in shared dormitory-style huts at Mandara, Horombo and Kibo camps instead of tents.

The route follows the same trail for ascent and descent. This makes logistics easier, but it also means you do not see as many different sides of the mountain as you would on routes such as Machame, Lemosho or Northern Circuit.

The main challenge of the five-day Marangu Route is altitude acclimatisation. You climb from the forest to high alpine zones in a short time. Altitude affects people differently, regardless of fitness level. EKO Tanzania Adventures will carry out regular health checks and your guide will monitor your condition. If you have more time, the six-day Marangu Route with an extra acclimatisation day at Horombo is normally the better option for summit success.

Detailed 5-Day Marangu Route Itinerary

Day 1 of 5-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Climb: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Your Mount Kilimanjaro a dventure begins with pickup from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. You will be transferred to Marangu Gate, where your guide will assist with registration at Kilimanjaro National Park.

Before starting the trek, your guide will check your equipment and introduce you to the mountain crew. This team usually includes a lead guide, assistant guide, cook and porters. The porters carry the main luggage and supplies, while you carry a daypack with water, rain gear, warm clothing, snacks and personal essentials.

The first day’s trek takes you through the rainforest. This is the wettest and greenest section of the mountain. The path is usually well maintained but can be muddy after rain. Look out for black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys and colourful birdlife in the trees.

The hike to Mandara Hut normally takes around four to five hours. The route rises gradually through dense forest before reaching Mandara Hut at approximately 2,700 metres.

After arriving, you can rest and enjoy tea or coffee. If you are feeling strong, your guide may take you on a short acclimatisation walk to Maundi Crater. From the crater area, there can be views towards Kenya and the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro, depending on the weather.

Return to Mandara Hut for dinner and overnight rest.

Elevation: 1,860m to 2,700m
Walking time: Approximately 4–5 hours
Meals included: Lunch and dinner
Overnight: Mandara Hut

Day 2 of  5-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Climb: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

After breakfast, leave the rainforest and enter the moorland zone. The vegetation becomes more open as you climb, with giant groundsels, lobelias and wide views across the mountain.

This is a longer day of trekking. The trail rises steadily, and you will begin to notice the effects of altitude. Your guide will encourage you to walk slowly and drink plenty of water. The best approach is simple: keep a comfortable pace, do not rush and listen to your body.

As you continue, the forest falls behind you and the route opens into broad moorland. On clear days, you may see Mawenzi Peak and the upper slopes leading towards Kibo, Kilimanjaro’s highest volcanic cone.

You will reach Horombo Hut at approximately 3,720 metres. The camp is larger than Mandara and is used by climbers both ascending and descending the mountain. After lunch, take time to rest. Your guide may lead a short walk to help your body adjust to the altitude.

Dinner is served at Horombo Hut before an early night.

Elevation: 2,700m to 3,720m
Walking time: Approximately 5–6 hours
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Horombo Hut

Day 3 of 5-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Climb : Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Today is a demanding but important day. After breakfast, leave Horombo Hut and continue towards Kibo Hut. The route crosses the saddle between Mawenzi Peak and Kibo Peak.

The landscape becomes much drier and more open. You will leave most vegetation behind and enter an alpine desert environment. The views are wide, but the air becomes noticeably thinner as you gain height.

This section can feel long because of the altitude and terrain. Your guide will keep the group moving at a slow and consistent pace. It is important to continue eating small meals, drinking water and protecting yourself from the sun and wind.

After approximately five to six hours, arrive at Kibo Hut at about 4,700 metres. This is the final camp before the summit attempt. You will have an early dinner, prepare your warm clothing, headlamp, gloves and water for the night climb, then rest for a few hours.

Your guide will explain the summit plan and check that everyone is ready. The climb to Uhuru Peak begins around midnight.

Elevation: 3,720m to 4,700m
Walking time: Approximately 5–6 hours
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Kibo Hut

Day 4 of 5-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Climb: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

This is summit day—the longest and most challenging day of the trek.

Around midnight, you will wake up, have a light snack and begin the ascent towards the summit. You will climb slowly in darkness, following a steep trail of volcanic scree. The temperature can be extremely cold, often below freezing, and the wind can make it feel even colder.

The key is to move slowly. Your guides use the phrase “pole pole,” meaning slowly in Swahili. A slow pace helps your body manage the altitude and gives you the best chance of continuing safely.

After several hours, you will reach Gillman’s Point at approximately 5,685 metres, located on the crater rim. From there, continue along the rim towards Uhuru Peak. This final section is tiring, but the sight of glaciers, the crater and the first light of sunrise can make the effort worthwhile.

Uhuru Peak stands at 5,895 metres above sea level. Reaching it is a major personal achievement, but your time at the summit will be brief because of the cold and altitude. Take photographs, enjoy the moment and begin your descent with your guide.

You will descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and lunch, then continue downhill to Horombo Hut. The descent is long, but the thicker air at Horombo often makes you feel noticeably better.

Dinner and overnight at Horombo Hut.

Elevation: 4,700m to 5,895m to 3,720m
Walking time: Approximately 11–14 hours
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Horombo Hut

Day 5: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

After breakfast, begin your final descent from Horombo Hut towards Marangu Gate. You will pass back through moorland and enter the rainforest again. The trail can be slippery when wet, so trekking poles can be helpful.

Arrive at Marangu Gate, where you will sign out with the park authorities. Climbers who reach Uhuru Peak receive a summit certificate; those who reach Gillman’s Point receive a certificate for their achievement.

After the formalities, meet your driver and transfer back to Moshi or Arusha. A hot shower, comfortable bed and celebration meal are usually very welcome after five days on the mountain.

Elevation: 3,720m to 1,860m
Walking time: Approximately 5–6 hours
Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Best Time to Climb the Marangu Route

The best times to climb Mount Kilimanjaro are generally:

  • January to early March: Often colder at higher altitude, but generally less crowded
  • June to October: Drier conditions and clear mountain views, though trails can be busier
  • December: Popular for holiday travel, with conditions that can vary

Kilimanjaro can be climbed at other times of year, but the main rainy seasons—typically April to May and November—can bring muddy trails, cloud and rain.

Important Preparation Advice

This five-day route is fast. Being physically fit helps, but fitness alone does not prevent altitude sickness. Train before arrival with regular walking, hiking, stair climbing and cardiovascular exercise. Bring proper waterproof clothing, warm summit layers, gloves, a headlamp, trekking poles and well-tested hiking boots.

Your guide’s decision on the mountain is final when it comes to safety. If your body is not responding well to altitude, descending is the right decision. Reaching the summit is important, but returning safely is more important.
